South Dakota Marijuana advocates optimistic about treatment, voters

Eliyah Hendrickson, 2, who was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome when he was five-months-old by a Colorado doctor, plays with a toy on Thursday at his home in Sioux Falls. "With Dravet Syndrome then comes a whole grab bag of neurological and some physical issues," George Hendrickson, the boy's dad, said. "We know of other children with Dravet that couldn't walk and talk until they went on CBD--the cannabis oil--then within 5 to 6 months these kids would cut their seizures down by 90 to 95 percent or more and would learn to walk and talk," Hendrickson said.(Photo: Joe Ahlquist / Argus Leader)Buy Photo

Colorado Supreme Court Is Expected to Rule on Off-Duty Marijuana Use

DENVER – A highly anticipated Colorado Supreme Court decision on an employee's right to use marijuana will come out Monday.

Brandon Coats maintains he was improperly fired from his job at Dish Network in 2010 after testing positive for marijuana. Coats, a quadriplegic, worked as a customer service representative for the company for years.

Lower courts have repeatedly ruled in Dish Network's favor, but last year the Colorado Supreme Court agreed to hear his case. The decision could impact businesses across the state as they continue to employ not only medical marijuana users but recreational users as well.

As of now, Colorado law affords employee's little if any protection should an employer decide to fire someone who fails a drug test for marijuana.

Nissan test driver could lose job after falling foul of new drug-driving laws

A Nissan test driver has become one of the first people in the North East to be banned from the roads following new drug regulations.

Ian Pearson, 26, was stopped by police officers in the early hours after finishing a night shift at the car maker’s Wearside plant on March 19.

The effects of driving under the influence of drugs can be devastating. Sarah Sillars, chief executive officer of the Advanced Institute of Motorists

New laws introduced in March this year mean drivers face prosecution if they exceed limits set for the presence of eight illegal drugs. Police can also issue roadside tests, using ‘drugalysers’.

Supreme Court to rule on workers' marijuana use

The Colorado Supreme Court on Monday is expected to issue a ruling on whether businesses can fire workers who use medical marijuana when off the clock.

The decision comes nine months after the state's highest court heard oral arguments in Brandon Coats' case against Dish Network.

Coats, a quadriplegic man who used marijuana off-duty to control muscle spasms, was fired in 2010 by Dish after failing a random drug test.

Which Wine Should You Pair With Your Weed?

More and more states are choosing to legalize marijuana. And as pot goes mainstream, it's acquiring a new level of sophistication. A somewhat surprising byproduct of this phenomenon is the rise of wine (or beer) and weed pairings, Dan Nosowitz writes for Modern Farmer.

Remembering when hemp was king in Wisconsin

During the heyday of the industrial hemp industry during World War I and II, Wisconsin was home to over 70 percent of the hemp mills in the U.S.

Quite a feat for an industry that was largely unknown in the Badger State in 1912.

One of the oldest cultivated fiber plants in the world, hemp seed was brought to the U.S. by the pilgrims in 1620. The early settlers used the fiber from the woody stalk to produce twine, thread and rope.

According to state archives, six acres of hemp were grown on the asylum farm at Mendota and three acres as the Wisconsin State Prison farm in 1908, by the Agronomy Department of the Wisconsin Experiment State in cooperation with the Office of Fiber Investigations of the USDA.

Ohio Prosecutor: Marijuana legalization would create 35000 jobs

A proposal to legalize marijuana that is likely headed toward Ohio’s fall ballot would create nearly 35,000 direct and indirect jobs in the state and generate an annual economic output of $7 billion, says a new report today coordinated by Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters.

“Legalization is coming to Ohio. We need to accept the reality is going to happen,” Deters said at a press conference at the Ohio State University Moritz School of Law where the report, “Marijuana & Ohio, Past Present and Potential” was unveiled.

“Why in the world, knowing this is coming, would we let the bad guys make all the money?” Deters asked.

Indiana residents beware: Smoke legal pot at your own risk

Hoosiers who try marijuana while visiting states where it's legal may risk breaking the law, or possibly losing their jobs, experts say, if they face a blood or urine draw when they return home.

If you're traveling this summer to a state where marijuana is legal and feel tempted to partake, employment and legal experts say you still may want to think twice before lighting up.

That's because the pot you smoke legally there could wind up causing you big problems back here at home — even days or weeks after the buzz has faded.

The most extreme consequences could be a trip to jail or getting booted from a job:
