Mississauga councillors vote against allowing legal cannabis stores once again

Mississauga councillors have voted against a proposal to allow legal cannabis dispensaries in the city, this time despite vocal support from Mayor Bonnie Crombie.

Mississauga initially opted not to allow legalized cannabis stores within city boundaries back in 2018 but local councillors had agreed to revisit that decision following a report from staff that examined the experiences of other municipalities.

However, on Thursday members of the Mississauga council general committee ultimately came to the same decision as they did three years ago, voting 8 to 4 against allowing legal cannabis stores to set up shop.

The matter will still have to go before Mississauga city council for a final vote.

Tecumseh council votes to reverse ban on cannabis retail

The Town of Tecumseh has become the final municipality in Windsor-Essex to opt in to cannabis retail stores.

In a notice posted on its website, the town said council adopted a motion allowing cannabis businesses to set up shop Tuesday night.

In April, council members voted to reconsider the ban on marijuana stores that had been in place since 2018.

Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara said that prior to Tuesday's vote there was an evenly split response to the town's call for feedback on the idea.

Indoor Cultivation is a Growth Industry

When growers in the United States began cultivating cannabis indoors in the 1980s and ’90s, the technology was limited. The equipment required to set up a standard grow room amounted to a few high-intensity lights, fans, a dehumidifier and, if you wanted to get fancy, a CO2 regulator. Local “hydroponics” shops carried three or four brands for each product—all nearly identical.

Canopy Growth Cuts Drake, Keeps Martha Stewart

Canopy Growth (NASDAQ: CGC) has been following a pretty strident strategy of restructuring the company as it keeps cutting assets and unwinding deals made by former CEO Bruce Linton.

The latest casualty this week was a deal with Aubrey “Drake” Graham to launch More Life Growth company. Drake originally made the deal in November 2019 with Linton. Under the agreement, Canopy sold 100% of its shares in a subsidiary to More Life in exchange for just 40% of the company. Drake held the remaining 60%.

Will cannabis shops start opening in Mississauga?

Marijuana. Weed. Pot. Grass. Cannabis. Call it what you like, but it will be a huge money maker for Mississauga businesses if City councillors decide to let stores open here.

A report that will be presented to councillors in the next few days shows that legalized cannabis stores will initially generate $74 million in income each year in total for operators if they are allowed to set up shop.

Currently Mississauga doesn't allow cannabis stores to operate within its borders following a decision in 2018 when local politicians decided not to opt-in to the Provincially-run program.

Hempcrete: Alberta company uses hemp to build tiny homes

An Alberta-based company is capitalizing on a budding hemp industry by turning the versatile plant into a main ingredient in the construction of tiny homes.

Christina Goodvin, owner of tiny homes and greenhouse design firm Goodvin Designs, uses hempcrete — a mixture of wood hemp shafts, a lime-based binder and water — as wall insulation in her tiny homes. Once it's set, the fibrous blocks can be placed inside dry wall, under floors or beneath a roof.

"It's basically a way to manage moisture in the walls," she told CBC's Edmonton AM on Thursday.

"It's great for any extreme climate actually, so in our northern climate, it's a great alternative."

Opinion: Cannabis advocates praise billion-dollar market, but seem wary of big business

Cannabis brings big money to those U.S. states willing to legalize. This is the message marijuana advocates have been preaching for years, and they take every opportunity to praise it as a selling point.

Some of the latest numbers prove that the sale of cannabis products is poised to become one of the largest, tax-generating inebriation markets in the U.S.
