Marijuana legalization makes black market weed cheaper, heroin more expensive

When states first began to “experiment” with the legalization of marijuana, lawmakers, state officials, and everyone else, for that matter, were eager to see how selling legal weed would pan out.

On the one hand, naysayers wanted to judge whether the socioeconomic cost of legalization was worth the tax dollars the market would surely drive into state and local coffers. At the same time, advocates stood waiting for a “told ya so” moment, when they could show the nation that a legitimate pot market would not lead to a drug-addled society. Years later, the results have been mixed.

These Canadian Cannabis Producers May Benefit From an Israeli Medical Innovation

According to Health Canada, the Canadian medical cannabis market currently contains 320,000 registered patients, and an estimated total of 8 million Canadians experience chronic pain. An Israeli pharma-tech, Syqe Medical, which specializes in inhalation devices for therapeutic drugs, has developed an innovative medial cannabis inhaler -- touted as a first of its kind -- to help treat these patients. During its announcement of regulatory approval in Canada on April 28, the company did not name a licensed producer. However, there is reason to believe that the licensed producer could be a North American cannabis operator headquartered in Canada called TerrAscend (OTC:TRSSF).

Canada's Regulated Industry Has Grown. What About the Black Market?

Canada is currently home to the largest legal adult-use cannabis industry on earth. The only other country that has legalized adult-use so far is Uruguay. Unfortunately, there are still unregulated markets.

Whereas Canada has a population of roughly 37.5 million people, Uruguay’s population is less than 1/10th of Canada’s (roughly 3.5 million people). In addition to a much larger population, Canada’s adult-use industry is open to anyone of legal age compared to Uruguay where only residents can make legal purchases. Canada’s legalization rollout was far from smooth, however, that was expected given the fact that Canada was essentially doing something that no other country had done before.

Canadian company raises $7 million, will develop fiber factory in Europe

Canadian natural fiber specialist Bast Fibre Technologies Inc. (BFTi) said it will use some of the $7 million it recently raised to develop a European manufacturing site as it focuses on ramping up production of fibers for non-woven products.

U.S. based private equity firm Merida Capital Holdings, New York, and existing investors provided the series A financing, which the company said will allow it to advance business beyond the R&D phase to full commercialization of its intellectual property in natural fiber processing.

“With this financing under our belt we can complete the final build out of our EU manufacturing site, continue the investment in our feedstock supply chain and enter full-scale commercialization,” said CEO Noel Hall.
