Will This Recently Announced Acquisition Make Canopy Growth Profitable at Last?

Canopy Growth (NASDAQ:CGC) has struggled to break even for years. Under then-CEO Bruce Linton, the company focused primarily on generating sales growth and uncovering more opportunities for the long term. However, now that sales growth is harder to achieve, and the pandemic shining a light on struggling businesses, investors aren't as willing to overlook a poor bottom line.

Cannabis Companies Begin To Embrace Sustainability

The preference of eco-conscious cannabis consumers to buy environmentally-friendly products has motivated many businesses to clean up their act.

Earth Day 2021 is upon us, and cannabis companies across the industry are mobilizing to take “sustainability” from buzzword to business practice. Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson as a national teach-in on the environment to raise awareness about issues like pollution and pesticide use.

While the cannabis industry has long been associated with the word “green”, the environmental impacts of production, packaging, distribution and materials sourcing for products like vape pens are often anything but.

‘Dispensaries knew they had to change’: How the cannabis industry adapted in the pandemic

The stress levels experienced in the past year caused many consumers to turn to cannabis as a coping mechanism.

That increased interest led dispensaries to bump up their ad spend, adopt the buy online, pickup in-store (BOPIS) model, implement curbside pickup, and even offer virtual consultations. Some dispensaries started or increased local delivery.

But the changes in public life also brought about radical changes in consumer behavior. While 4/20 and the Friday before Memorial Day had been the top two sales days for dispensaries every year of the past five years, they each failed to crack the top five last year, according to Nina Simosko, chief commercial officer at Akerna, a cannabis software company.

All signs point to 2021 being the year to place your bets on cannabis. 'It's very Darwinian': Experts predicting shakedown in Canada's cannabis market

After a boom in the cannabis industry following legalization in 2018, experts are predicting a rough patch for the sector in the coming years.

Alberta has 611 cannabis stores, more than any other province in the country.

“There’s clearly a demand for cannabis,” said Trevor Fencott, the CEO of Fire & Flower, one of the largest cannabis retailers in Canada.

“We have a vibrant retail industry in Canada, we have a vibrant ancillary services industry in Canada for legal, accounting, all that other stuff that we built in there, that’s important.”

In the two-and-a-half years since legalization, the marijuana market has had some struggles. The initial hype was followed by a high demand that producers and sellers initially couldn’t keep up with.

The Mega Merger Between Tilray and Aphria Could Be Off To A Rocky Start

Earlier this week, the rumor mill started to imply that the merger between Aphria, Inc. (APHA.TO) (APHA) and Tilray, Inc. (TLRY) could be in trouble.

The basis of the opinion is related to how Tilray extended the date of the shareholder meeting and lowered the bar to pass amendments. Previously, Tilray required a majority of shareholders to be present for special shareholder meetings.

Last week, Tilray’s board approved an amendment that only requires there to be one-third of voting shareholders to reach a quorum. Several media outlets and analysts tried to imply that Tilray was having a challenging time in regards to gathering enough votes to pass the mega-merger agreement.
