Nevada races to finalize legal marijuana rules

Nevada state legislators put the final touches on measures to regulate marijuana this week, just weeks before Nevada becomes the fifth state to legalize the use and sale of marijuana for recreational purposes.

The state, which suffered the brunt of an economic recession that hit its tourism and construction industries especially hard, is now anticipating tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue from legalization. And as tourism figures bounce back to new records, some in the Silver State think legal marijuana will be the next big draw.

“We’re going to really market this thing around the world,” said Sen. Tick Segerblom (D), the chairman of the state Senate Judiciary Committee.

Florida lawmakers strike a deal on medical marijuana

Florida legislative leaders have struck a deal about carrying out a voter-approved constitutional amendment that broadly legalized medical marijuana for patients with debilitating illnesses.

The medical marijuana issue was not included in Gov. Rick Scott's call for a special legislative session scheduled to last from Wednesday afternoon through Friday. The call focused on funding for education and economic development.

But after failing to agree during this spring's regular legislative session on a plan to carry out the medical-marijuana amendment, lawmakers were under intense pressure to resolve the issue. The Senate on Wednesday morning announced plans to take up the issue during the special session.

Will The DOJ's New Marijuana Task Force Kill Legal Weed?

One of the primary reasons there has not been much talk, as of late, about a crackdown on statewide marijuana legalization is U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is still waiting for a marijuana task force to submit a review of federal marijuana policy.

Although there is not much known about the inner workings of this so-called marijuana subcommittee, the group is expected to deliver its recommendations to Sessions by the end of next month.

Marijuana Access Advocates Weigh Paths Forward In Indiana

Indiana may not join the next wave of states that legalize medical or recreational marijuana, but it doesn’t mean Hoosiers can’t partake in the booming business.

That was the message from national Marijuana Business Association founder Dave Rheins at a forum in Indianapolis Tuesday night.

In a cigar smoke-filled room at a downtown social club, he told a small crowd other states’ up-start marijuana sectors need lawyers, marketers, investors and agritech experts to get involved.

“You do not have to be a farmer to be a part of the cannabis and hemp revolution. … You do not have to touch the plant,” he says. “These small and medium businesses, they need money, but they need, more than that, your experience as professionals.”

Roadside 'drugalyzers' for marijuana favoured after testing

Public Safety Canada may have found their solution for detecting high drivers once marijuana is legalized.

In a pilot project, Public Safety Canada, the RCMP and seven local law enforcement agencies including the Halifax Regional Police tested a pair of “drugalyzers” from December to March and recommend taking the devices to full-time use.

“The results from this pilot project indicate that with the proper training and standard operating procedures, these devices are a useful additional tool for Canadian law enforcement to better detect individuals who drive under the influence of drugs,” the report said.

Court Allows Colorado Couple to Sue Marijuana Growers

A cannabis farm’s neighbor can sue them for smells and other nuisances that could harm their property values, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday.

The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling revives a lawsuit between a Colorado horse farm and a neighboring marijuana-growing warehouse.

The horse farm’s owners, the Reillys, sued in 2015, claiming that the warehouse would diminish their land’s value by emitting “noxious odors” and attracting unsavory visitors. A federal district court dismissed the Reillys’ claim, and the warehouse opened in 2016.

DOJ’s Mysterious Marijuana Subcommittee

Few details have emerged about a potentially influential review.

Led by an outspoken legalization opponent, Jeff Sessions' Justice Department is reviewing federal marijuana policy, with significant changes possible soon. Almost nothing about the review process is publicly known and key players in the policy debate have not been contacted.

The outcome of the review could devastate a multibillion-dollar industry and countermand the will of voters in eight states if the Obama administration's permissive stance on non-medical sales is reversed.

LA County Extends Ban on Marijuana in Unincorporated Areas, Limits Personal Cultivation

The County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously today to ban all commercial cannabis activities -- medical and non-medical -- in unincorporated areas and took a first pass at regulating personal cultivation.

The move extends a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated areas that has been in place since 2010 and broadens the prohibition to include the cultivation, manufacture, testing and distribution of the drug for other than personal use.

What a Regulated UK Cannabis Market Might Mean for Business

Nick Clegg has warned of the risks of 'unfettered commercialisation', but how could the UK build a model that works for both small and large enterprises?

Toronto's Public Health Chief Wants Pot Possession Decriminalized Now

Dr. Eileen de Villa urges Ottawa to immediately decriminalize possession of recreational marijuana until legislation to legalize it comes into force in July 2018.

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health wants Ottawa to immediately decriminalize possession of recreational pot until legislation to legalize and regulate cannabis comes into force in July 2018.

“Given that cannabis possession will soon be lawful in Canada, it is recommended that the Board of Health urge the federal government to immediately decriminalize the possession of non-medical cannabis for personal use,” says a new report by Dr. Eileen de Villa.
