The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency is about to make a decision that could have wide-ranging implications on the state-sanctioned marijuana industry: to reschedule or not to reschedule marijuana's position as an illegal substance.

It's become a familiar lament in the age of legal marijuana: Weed from places like Colorado and Washington is making its way all over the country, creating headaches for law enforcement.

The Colombian Senate approved a bill that legalizes the use and cultivation of marijuana for medical purpose, making it the fourth Latin American country to relax its marijuana laws.

The bill, which still must be approved by the Constitutional Court and signed by President Juan Manuel Santos, will replace an existing decree issued by the president in December.

The bill was promoted by Senator Juan Manuel Galan, who said on his Twitter account that he considered it a “historic day” and a victory for patients.

Galan also shared a video featuring a family who pushed for the legalization of medical marijuana.

He has virtually no money, no strategy to compete in battleground states and no plan to stop talking about his drug use.

Yet with the Republican Party facing the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency, Libertarian presidential hopeful Gary Johnson could be a factor in 2016. The former two-term New Mexico governor, a Republican businessman perhaps best known for his years-long push to legalize marijuana, has a sobering message for a “never-Trump” movement desperately seeking a viable alternative.

“I will be the only third-party candidate on the ballot in all 50 states,” Johnson says. “I’m it.”

Marijuana plants could be growing legally in Ohio soil in a year, predicts state Sen. Dave Burke, an architect of Ohio's newly minted medical marijuana law.

"As soon as 16 months, you would have products tested and available," the Marysville Republican said.

House Bill 523, the medical marijuana law, completed a rocky journey through the legislature Wednesday. It is now headed to Gov. John Kasich.

Kasich has not indicated whether he will sign the bill into law. He also could veto it or allow it to take effect without his signature.

When a Vietnamese attendee at a town hall asked Pres. Obama about his weed-smoking past, the U.S. president replied that he “didn’t know” if reports of his marijuana use were true. And, after expounding on his personal turn-around, warned, “Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet.

Could legalizing marijuana solve the state budget crisis?

It’s a conversation that Del. Mike Pushkin (D-Kanawha) said he at least wants to get started at the State Capitol, introducing a bill legalizing the drug as the special budget session continues.

The bill would decriminalize and permit personal use, growth and possession of certain amounts of marijuana by persons over the age of 21.

“I’m not under the impression that (House) Speaker (Tim) Armstead is going to run this bill,” Pushkin said on “580 Live” with Charleston Mayor Danny Jones Wednesday. “I just thought it was a good time to at least start talking about it, because we are in a financial crisis in this state.

The good news, no the fantastic news, is that the Illinois bill that decriminalizes marijuana passed both the Illinois House and Senate and is waiting for Governor Rauner's signature. The bad news is that it appears that he is going to wait until the 11th hour to make a decision on the bill, as he has done on every piece of cannabis legislation that has hit his desk. He has 60 days from the time it passed to sign it. Of course, if he does nothing, it becomes law. It is clear to the people of Illinois that our new Republican governor is no fan of cannabis, neither medicinal nor recreational.

Governor Rauner is not a fan of cannabis

While many Colorado officials have come forward over the past few months to declare that legal weed is working better than they ever imagined, some prosecutors across the state believe the legal cannabis industry is responsible for the majority of the state’s murders.

In a recent interview with Fox 31 Denver, Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler said nearly two-thirds of the homicide cases he has overseen in recent years have had a blatant connection to marijuana. This uprising in murder, he said, could be traced back to a legion of small time dope dealers who are slinging the herb on the street with rabid enthusiasm because legal weed has made it easier for the black market to thrive.
