Ohio pot legalization group spent $21M in failed effort

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Supporters spent more than $21 million on a losing fall campaign to legalize marijuana in Ohio for personal and medical use, campaign finance reports filed Friday show.

Most of the nearly $12 million ResponsibleOhio raised from July to October came from 10 companies or organizations listed under corporate names, according to the figures reported to the Secretary of State's office. About 250 people gave individual contributions during the period. Their contributions of $2 to $200 totaled less than $8,000.

'Grandma's magic remedy:' Mexico's medical marijuana secret

When her legs ache, this Mexican grandmother rubs them with marijuana-infused alcohol. She is well aware the homemade remedy defies the country's cannabis ban, but her family has used the concoction to treat ailments since she was a child, handing it down the generations.

"I really have a lot of faith in it," said the slender 53-year-old, a housewife and amateur dancer who spoke to AFP about her cannabis use on condition of strict anonymity.

"When I'm very tired, I spread it on my legs, feet and body. It's really good. I can go without salt but not without marijuana with alcohol. My grandmother used it," she said, holding a plastic bottle filled with the leaves and liquid.

The Language of Prohibition 2.0

As the nonsense that underpinned the Drug War becomes increasingly apparent, and drug law reform gathers momentum, there is a need to recognise the subtle language towards a drug reform model that could result in Prohibition 2.0 – an approach that fails to fundamentally address the fallacies of a prohibition.

Here are some common statements which may appear to support a reform agenda, but seriously risk producing new form of state control, coercive treatment and punishment for people using the wrong drugs.

Key Players in Delaware's Legalization of Industrial Hemp Farming

The United States government banned the cultivation of hemp in 1957 in an effort to crack down on marijuana use, but the drug isn't the only thing for which the plant is used. In fact, it's valued as a food source and in the manufacture of textiles, prompting many states to begin legalizing hemp in recent years. Delaware joined this roster in 2013, legalizing weed for medical purposes.

The following state officials have played crucial roles in the effort to legalize industrial hemp cultivation in the state.

How will Federal cannabis legalization shake out?

Nelson Police will continue to take enforcement action if they find businesses working outside guidelines set out by the courts.

Several cannabis dispensaries in Nanaimo were recently raided by RCMP, causing residents of Nelson — widely referred to as Canada’s “pot capital" — to wonder if similar action may be taken here on the road to legalization.

With new dispensaries popping up all the time, and a promise of cannabis legalization from Justin Trudeau, there is a lot of confusion surrounding legally accessible cannabis.

What these new laws will entail, how they will be enforced and to what level is currently unknown.

However, both operators and law enforcement have their ideas about how the process will evolve over the next year.

United for Care is Working Hard to Raise Funds and Signatures before January

A full year has passed since Florida let medicinal marijuana slip through the cracks by a mere 2%. Of course you know that hasn’t kept anyone down, especially not John Morgan and United for Care, the most well-known marijuana reform initiative in the state of Florida which is fighting for legalized medical marijuana to be offered to people who live with qualifying debilitating conditions.

Last year this ballot initiative was thrown through all sorts of hoops in order to get to the ballot boxes in November – this year it appears that they’ve managed to fix up their language to suite everyone’s concerns from the previous year. Now the hardest part is upon us – gathering petitions and fundraising to pay signature gatherers.

Bureaucratic Hurdles & Spotty Access To Medicinal Cannabis Gives Rise To ‘Cannabis Refugees’

“I tried to everything I could while in Alabama, but now that we are here [in California] it’s much better and we have a support system,” the mother of a daughter with epilepsy tells MintPress of their decision to pack their bags and head to a state where medicinal cannabis is available.

MENDOCINO COUNTY, California — Cannabis has a rich history of medicinal use going back thousands of years. It is only in the last couple hundred years that the plant has faced restrictive laws and prohibition, particularly in the United States, where it’s been classified as a Schedule I drug with no known medicinal benefits and a high rate of addiction since the Controlled Substances Act was passed in 1970.

From 'Raving Maniacs' to the 'Prince of Pot': A History of Weed in Canada

British Columbia may be known for its bud now, but Canada has had a complicated relationship with marijuana over the years. A synopsis:

1922

Emily Murphy, an iconic early feminist and Canada's first female judge, published "The Black Candle," a 400-page screed against drug use and the threat of the "black and yellow races." In the book, Murphy quotes a police chief saying that pot smokers "become raving maniacs and are liable to kill or indulge in any form of violence to other persons, using the most savage methods of cruelty without, as said before, any sense of moral responsibility."
