MP Shane Knuth backs cannabis industry for Far North Queensland, Australia

DALRYMPLE MP Shane Knuth has thrown his weight behind the development of a medicinal cannabis industry for Far North Queensland, proposing the Tablelands as a cultivation centre.

It follows plans by a Yungaburra pharmacy to become one of the first medical marijuana dispensaries in Queensland.

Mr Knuth wants his electorate, which stretches from Atherton to Charters Towers, to take the lead in cultivating the alternative crop, providing numerous benefits to Queensland.

“Medicinal cannabis has the potential to provide economic benefits, health benefits and research opportunities in Queensland,” he said.

“Currently, the cultivation of cannabis is prohibited in Queensland.

Uruguayan Government Promotes Medical Marijuana Research

MONTEVIDEO – The Uruguayan government wants to spur research on medical marijuana under the 2013 legislation that decriminalized cannabis in the country, Milton Romani, secretary-general of the National Drugs Board, told EFE.

After a videoconference with Israeli experts, Romani said that Uruguay’s legal framework on marijuana “provides a comparative advantage” over other countries in developing medical uses of cannabis.

Dr. Itai Gur-Arie, head of Sheba Pain Clinic, said research on medicinal marijuana faces obstacles in Israel, where the substance is still banned.

Former Mexican president says country will legalise all drugs within a decade

All drugs including cocaine, heroin and crystal meth will be legal in Mexico within 10 years, said the country’s former president Vicente Fox, after a court ruling that he said makes the legalisation of marijuana inevitable.

“I think marijuana [legalisation] is a first step,” Fox told Reuters on Tuesday. “It’s now irreversible.”

Fox was president between 2000 and 2006 and became an advocate of legalising drugs after leaving office.

Earlier this month, the supreme court approved growing marijuana for recreational use. The landmark decision blasts open the door for an eventual legalisation in Mexico, where warring gangs have waged a decade of drug violence.

Menominee tribe files suit for right to cultivate hemp

A northern Wisconsin tribe has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice for the right to cultivate industrial hemp.

The Menominee Nation argued in the case it “should have the right under the Farm Bill to cultivate industrial hemp in the same manner as Kentucky, Colorado and other states.”

The tribe has been in negotiations with the DOJ and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency regarding the cultivation of industrial hemp. In October, the officials from the two institutions raided the Menominee Reservation and destroyed its industrial hemp crop.

Brendan Johnson, an attorney representing the Menominee Nation, argued the provisions of the Farm Bill apply to the Menominee tribe.

Medical marijuana bill advances in the Pennsylvania House

HARRISBURG -- A state House committee advanced a medical marijuana bill in a bi-partisan vote Wednesday, but passing it into law will still likely require changes.

A House vote on the bill could come as soon as next week, but it's not clear if still-unresolved issues will stall the legislation.

“I would expect that [the bill] will be amended on the floor. We are still trying to work out the details of those amendments. There will be some changes made, but we wanted to get the vehicle in place, so that we can do a final vote and hopefully send it off to the Governor very soon,” said House Majority Leader Dave Reed, R-Indiana.

Michigan Cops Use Medical Marijuana Money To Buy I-Pads, Truck, Shirts

Much of the money allocated to law enforcement in 2015 from the Michigan Medical Marihuana Fund went unused, a governmental report shows, and those funds that were spent were used for questionable purposes.

Legislation passed in 2013 (HB 5313) and signed into law in 2014 by Governor Snyder allowed money from the state’s Medical Marihuana Fund (the Fund) to be used by local units of law enforcement “for the operation and oversight of the Michigan medical marihuana program… operation and oversight grants are for education, communication and enforcement of the Michigan medical marihuana act…”

Reinheimer said he plans to appeal his termination before Vermilion's Civil Service Commission. If they reject his appeal, he plans to sue the city.
