A Queensland MP wants part of his far north electorate to become the state's cannabis capital.

Shane Knuth, MP of Dalrymple, thinks the fertile soil and annual rainfalls of the Atherton Tablelands, near Cairns, would be perfect for growing medicinal marijuana.

Knuth, from the Katter's Australia Party, says farmers in his electorate would be enthusiastic about the opportunity to grow the crops.

"I have been approached by farmers in my electorate who ... would embrace the opportunity to work with the government as growers of this new emerging medical crop," he said in a statement on Thursday.

Knuth has been Dalrymple MP since 2009.

Montevideo - Authorities in Uruguay say the country's legal pot-growing clubs may be selling marijuana and cannabis products without approval, creating a kind of "gray market".

The pot-growing clubs are allowed to have 45 members who can collectively cultivate up to 99 plants for personal use, but they cannot sell the marijuana.

Uruguay became the first nation to approve marijuana legalization and regulation in 2013.

What will come after marijuana legalization? Increasingly, drug policy experts and skeptics of legalization worry that it will be a giant industry — one rife with the greed and excesses that led companies to market deadly products like tobacco that cause hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. And while marijuana is not deadly, experts are concerned that overpromoting and overmarketing pot's use could lead to more dependence on the drug.
