The Manitoba government is planning to caution people about edible cannabis products and ban consumption in public places.

Justice Minister Cliff Cullen said Tuesday the Progressive Conservative government will introduce a bill in the legislature before mid-December to ban the public consumption of recreational cannabis in all its forms.

Manitoba's current public-consumption law mentions only smoking or vaping, leaving the door open to oils, sprays and other forms of cannabis that have been available since legalization last year.

With the federal government paving the way for edible cannabis products such as cookies to be sold next month, Cullen said the province wants to restrict all forms of public consumption.

In the months leading up to cannabis legalization, employers are worried marijuana would lead to dangerous work environments.

One year later, with edibles, extracts and topicals available for sale in mid-December, those fears haven’t faded.

About 60 per cent of businesses in a survey from the Conference Board of Canada (CBOC) this August showed concern, but also had no zero-tolerance policies in effect.

While golfers are often viewed as conservative creatures, their appetite for CBD suggests they’re anything but.

Golf is a sport of fractions and fine margins and many things which boost performance are often voraciously adopted – so, when it comes to a month’s supply of CBD from Holland & Barrett at £30  it’s a lot cheaper than £1,000 set of clubs that may be jettisoned after a few weeks.

It looks like seniors are finally coming into cannabis if the numbers are any indication from Statistics Canada’s latest National Cannabis Survey (NCS).

The survey released Wednesday shows seniors are the fastest-growing users of cannabis compared to all other demographics.

“Cannabis consumption among seniors has been accelerating at a much faster pace than it has among other age groups,” the report said. “For example, in 2012, less than 1% of seniors (about 40,000) reported using, contrasting sharply with estimates from 2019 indicating that more than 400,000 seniors have used cannabis in the past three months.

A motion being brought before Vancouver city council on Tuesday will look at regulations on the sale and advertisement of vaping and vape-related products.

Currently, the City of Vancouver does not impose restrictions on where vape retail shops can be located in the same way that it does with liquor stores or cannabis shops. There is also no license category for retailers selling vape products.

With Statistics Canada reporting 578,000 new cannabis users in the last six months in its National Cannabis Survey, findings in a U.S. study are troublesome for those who buy CBD products online.

According to Statistics Canada, 28% of users claim they only purchase cannabis products from  government-sanctioned retailers. That means 72% of the more than 5 million Canadians, age 15 and up, who reported recently using marijuana are looking to illegal sources — online dispensaries, unlicensed dispensaries and dealers — for cannabis products.

According to the RCMP, a parent in Nova Scotia found a packet of cannabis edibles mixed in with their child’s Halloween candy.

On October 31, around 9:30 pm, the Kings District RCMP report responding to a call from a parent in Coldbrook, Nova Scotia, a town just over an hour’s drive from Halifax.

“The package has a Halloween-themed label on the front and contains several jujube candies inside,” the RCMP wrote in the release. The parent reportedly was alerted by a sticker on the back of the package indicating that the candy contains THC — the psychoactive element in cannabis.

It's been a little over a year since Canada legalized marijuana for recreational use. Oct. 17 also marked the opening of the new cannabis market in Canada that will include beverages and other derivatives, although products won't be available to purchase until at least December. While there will be some challenges ahead for the new segment of the cannabis market, it's hard to imagine the next 12 months will be as hectic as the past year has been.

Let's look at five of the biggest surprises that have weighed on the industry since legalization took effect in Canada.

The government has been wrestling with the underground market despite cannabis legalization expanding, but the newest numbers from Statistics Canada suggest that more users are looking to legal products.

The agency asked 5,452 Canadians where they got the cannabis they used in the past three months.

About half, 53 percent, of the respondents reported obtaining cannabis from legal sources in the second and third quarters of 2019 compared with corresponding estimates from the same period in 2018, in which only 23 percent used the legal market to purchase pot.

Health Canada is warning Canadians that the ingredients used to flavour some vaping products have not been tested to establish if they can be safely inhaled, although the federal department reports it’s working towards rectifying the issue.

“The inhalation of flavours — this happens with electronic cigarettes— it did not exist before this,” Mathieu Morissette, a researcher at the University Institute of Cardiology and Respirology of Quebec, and a professor at the Faculty of Medicine at l’Université Laval, told the Canadian Press.
