Marijuana & pregnancy: What we know

Limited research is creating real problems in understanding the impact of cannabis not only on an expectant mother, but her child as well.

Could what we know about marijuana and pregnancy be factually incorrect? Studies dating back to the 1970s have shown marijuana has had effects on birth weight, length of gestation, and more. One recent study aimed to prove whether or not past research was sound in its findings.

Sarnia, Ont. health officials worry cannabis edibles ‘adds a new dimension’ to impaired driving after spike in charges

Sarnia police say the small, southern Ontario city has reached a record high for impaired driving rates this year and are pointing to legalized cannabis and incoming edibles products as the problem.

Officers laid 41 impaired driving charges from January 2019 to August 2019 — a 41 percent increase from the same period last year, which saw 28 charges.

“I’m not sure what the cause of it is, but given the time of the rise, I can only assume the legalization of cannabis has something to do with it,” Cst. Shawn Urban told BlackburnNews.com.

“We’ve seen extremely high readings and vehicle accidents … with people impaired by drugs, we see people passed out behind the wheel. It’s very obvious to our officers that there are signs of impairment there,” he said.

Canada's illegal pot dealers big players on the world stage

Canada’s black market drug dealers are now the world’s fourth largest exporters of cannabis, according to Public Safety Canada.

Citing a Public Safety Canada report — Patterns In Cannabis Cryptomarkets In Canada In 2018 — a Blacklock’s Reporter article says 2.5 tons of cannabis is now sold and shipped annually from Canada.

Dealers using cryptomarkets or black market websites for illegal sales now rank fourth behind their counterparts in the U.S., U.K. and Germany, says the Public Safety Canada report.

“Prior to legalization Canada ranked eighth for cannabis revenues,” added the report.

After Parliament legalized pot in 2018, Public Safety Canada says “sophisticated criminal entrepreneurs” used the law to wildly increase black market Internet sales.

Weed history: Nova Scotia is the birthplace of cannabis in Canada

If you have ever visited Nova Scotia, you would know about its rich history. It was ground zero for the largest man-made explosion prior to Hiroshima. It supplies the city of Boston with a Christmas tree every year. And you’re never more than 60 kilometres from the sea.

Here is something you won’t read in the history books: Nova Scotia is the birthplace of cannabis in Canada.

It’s something few people would expect given how Nova Scotia’s identity is anchored to the ocean, but this long connection with cannabis dates back 400 years. When European settlers colonized Canada they would first arrive on the east coast. Many of those settlers brought skills and trades such as farming and fishing. One of those trades was horticulture.

THC-infused edibles and CBD-infused edibles

With edibles coming to brick-and-mortar shops in mid-December, users are looking to get high without the smoke.

But when choosing edibles, users will want to pay attention to whether the product has CBD or THC, two compounds with very different effects.

CBD

CBD, the non-psychoactive component within cannabis has been widely touted for its medical benefits to help people with, among other conditions, chronic pain. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports CBD is not physically addictive.

One of Canada's oldest medical cannabis dispensaries just got raided. And people are not happy

Members of the Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club are banding together in protest as a result of club’s Thursday raid — and subsequent shut-down — by B.C.’s Community Safety Unit.

The non-profit compassion club, which was founded nearly 25 years ago, has operated an unlicensed dispensary in Victoria for the past 18 years to provide affordable medical cannabis to patients in need.

Buyers Club president and founder, Ted Smith says that authorities seized most of the product in the store and ordered it to be shut down. Although many were surprised by the search and seizure, Smith told CBC’s All Points West that he was not.

Marijuana’s effect on sore, aching muscles

Whether it’s after a long workout or a moving injury, soreness and stiffness can complicate anyone’s life, but they don’t have to. With the rise of opioid addiction, is it possible that marijuana and CBD can alleviate some of the symptoms of sports and back injuries?

study published in 2017 in Health Affairs found that this is precisely what’s happening in states with medical cannabis laws: Prescriptions for opioid painkillers in these states dropped by 1,826 per doctor as patients found their alternatives.

Majority of Canadians support temporary vaping ban: poll

A majority of Canadians support a temporary ban on e-cigarettes following a rise in serious lung damage, a new poll suggests.

The Research Co. survey found 74 per cent of those polled would agree with their province implementing a temporary ban on vaping products like a controversial one that has been implemented in Massachusetts.

Health agencies in North America are investigating the potential harms caused by vaping following a mysterious lung illness related to e-cigarettes.

Policing cannabis an issue in West Lincoln

Penalizing improper usage of a personal cannabis licence may prove too challenging in West Lincoln.

“Law enforcement is on the outside looking in,” Niagara Regional Police Service 8 District Staff Sergeant Rom DiEgidio told council members when he and Chief of Police Bryan MacCulloch recently presented at committee.

It is extremely difficult to investigate cannabis licence infractions and lead to a charge or conviction, he said.

Drug-related calls are on the rise in West Lincoln from residents who are smelling and seeing things they don’t like, he said, which was totally expected with cannabis legalization.

Are lower pot prices finally coming to Ontario?

In October, Quebec-based pot producer Hexo Corp. announced the unveiling of a new cannabis line comprising a hybrid blend of sativa called “Original Stash.”

Most newsworthy about the new line of pot: it marked a significant price reduction for the cannabis seller, with 28-gram packages priced at just $4.49 a gram — less than half the average retail price, and lower even than the average cost of cannabis on the black market.
