Happy Groundhog Day! Bill Murray's Thoughts on Marijuana

Since today is Groundhog Day, we'd like to highlight the always elusive Bill Murray and his thoughts on marijuana legalization, which he posted in a Reddit AMA quite some time ago, but touches on issues especially important today. He weighed in on a variety of topics, including what it was like to make Groundhog Day and the best sandwich he’s ever eaten. But the most insightful part of Murray’s Q&A session with fans probably came when someone asked him for his thoughts on recreational marijuana.

Here’s his full response:

Vermont looks again at legalizing recreational cannabis

A bill has been proposed in the Vermont House that would make it legal for adults to possess and grow small amounts of marijuana.

The proposal would remove all civil and criminal penalties for adult possession of up to 2 ounces of marijuana and for the cultivation of a total two mature marijuana plants and seven immature plants.

The bill was introduced by Democratic Reps. Maxine Grad of Moretown and Charles Conquest of Newbury, and Republican Rep. Thomas Burditt of West Rutland.

Under state law, possession of up to 1 ounce of marijuana is a civil violation that carries an up to $200 fine. Possessing 1 to 2 ounces could result in up to six months in jail.

NH lawmakers weigh latest marijuana bills on decriminalization, legalization

N.H. lawmakers are considering several bills this session that could change the state's existing marijuana laws.

House Bill 640 would reduce the penalty for one ounce or less to a violation. Currently, a possession may result in up to 1 year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

"I think this is the year for decriminalization," said Matt Simon, New England Political Director for the Marijuana Policy Project.

In light of the legalization of recreational marijuana in Maine and Massachusetts, Simon said he's hopeful lawmakers will adapt the changes to a battle that's decades in the making.

"Completely offended, the woman demanded that police investigate this 'outrageous' price hike," Northern Territory police said in a Facebook post about the call.

She hung up when authorities asked for more details.

"If you know a drug dealer who is ripping you off, give us a call, we'd love to help," police said.

Alaska's December Marijuana Tax Revenue Tops $145K

The second full month of marijuana tax revenue has entered the state treasury.

In December, 13 marijuana cultivators paid $145,800 to the Alaska Department of Revenue's Tax Division, revenue audit supervisor Kelly Mazzei wrote Tuesday.

Under Alaska law, growers pay the state's tax. Bud is taxed at $50 per ounce, and other parts of the plant, like the stems and leaves, are taxed at $15 per ounce.

A total of 167 pounds of marijuana bud and 46 pounds of other parts were sold in December, Mazzei wrote.

Seven of the growers who paid taxes were located in Fairbanks and two were in Kenai. Kasilof, Sterling, Juneau and Anchorage each had one commercial grower selling wholesale in December.
