Why Donald Trump could be the Canadian marijuana industry's secret weapon

In the last few years, attitudes to marijuana in the U.S. appeared to be easing.

And in many ways, they have. Four states have fully legalized recreational cannabis, and four more voted to follow them in November.

But the same election that doubled the number of pot-tolerant states brought Donald Trump into the White House. With him come people in key cabinet positions who loathe marijuana and have at least some power to act on it. Marijuana is still illegal under U.S. federal law.

Canada: Looming federal marijuana allotment may hurt veterans

Almost three-quarters of veterans using medical marijuana will feel the impact this spring when the federal government imposes a new limit on the amount of weed for which it will pay.

A new report says 74 per cent of veterans whose medical pot is covered by the government consume more than three grams per day — which will put them over the three-gram daily maximum the government is poised to impose starting in May.

The report says one in three uses 10 grams — the current maximum daily allotment.

The figures are contained in an internal Veterans Affairs Canada audit that raises broad questions about the use of pot by veterans, including claims that it reduces the use of painkillers and other addictive drugs.

Teen use and perceptions of marijuana change after legalization, US study finds

A study out of the University of California, Davis has provided new insights into how marijuana legalization affects teenagers' perceptions and use of the drug.

Researchers found that among Grade 8 and 10 students in Washington State, marijuana use increased after the drug was legalized.

Attitudes were also affected. The study's findings showed teenagers were less concerned about the harms associated with marijuana after the law changed.

Results varied among slightly older students. Among Grade 12 students, no shift in attitude or use was reported.

In Colorado, where marijuana was legalized in 2012, the study's results were also different. Researchers found no change in attitude or use of marijuana after legalization — for any age group.

Massachusetts: The Marijuana Law Hits a Six-Month Speed Bump

A vote over the holidays puts the brakes on recreational pot shops.

It’s been two weeks of ups and downs for those celebrating Massachusetts’ new legal marijuana law. While many were taking their first-ever fully legal puffs inside their living rooms over the holidays, lawmakers gathered almost completely without public scrutiny to slow things down—keeping in place, for a little while longer, a temporary system that allows adults to possess and use marijuana, but not to sell it or to buy it in a store.

As marijuana use increases, societal perceptions are altering

A new report, seeking to understand if perceptions about marijuana use are changing with the greater liberalization in the U.S., has found the most significant affect to be among eighth- and tenth-graders.

The research is focused on Washington (Washington and Colorado became the first two states to legalize recreational use of marijuana for adults in 2012). The influence of the legalization on young people, and in shaping societal attitudes in general, has for a while being the topic of the debate. The research, conducted by the University of California Davis School of Medicine, set-out to separate fact from fiction.

Hollyweed: Hollywood Sign Changed To Reflect State's Acceptance Of Marijuana?

Los Angeles residents awoke Sunday morning to find one of the city’s iconic landmarks had been updated with the changing of the years: the famous Hollywood sign had been modified to read “Hollyweed.”

According to a report from the Los Angeles Police Department, security cameras captured footage of a lone individual dressed in black tactical-style clothing climbing the mountain on which the sign sits. According to Sergeant Guy Juneau, the prankster then scaled the sign and used tarpaulins decorated with a peace symbol and a love heart to change the O’s to E’s.

California's Gigantic Medical-Marijuana Industry Could Be Devastated by an Unlikely Source

If you support the legalization of marijuana, 2016 didn't give you much to complain about. Last year, residents in four states approved recreational-marijuana ballot initiatives, doubling the total from the end of 2015, while five new states put medical-cannabis laws on their books. By year's end, 28 states and Washington, D.C., had legalized medical pot.
