Rhode Island: Church service involving marijuana to be held in park

ROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Members of a church that uses marijuana in its ceremonies are planning to hold a service at Roger Williams National Memorial.

The West Greenwich-based Healing Church says it’ll lead a ceremony at a well at the park at 8 p.m. Saturday, but members may be at the park as early as 4 p.m. to conduct a “circumambulation” of the park.

Church members this week have been praying at the North Main Street memorial and have received a permit to hold the service there.

Park officials have said the permit allows members of the church to assemble, but not to violate any laws. Church members say the 45-minute service is timed with the Hebrew holiday of Shavuot and the Christian eve of Pentecost.

The Latest Warning About Pot Is One You've Never Heard Before... Until Now

The history of marijuana prohibition is filled with warnings. What kind of warnings are there about marijuana today? Well, it can still get you arrested in many places... but aside from that, true or false, what other popular warnings are circulating today?

One fairly simple and rather obvious way to find this out is to do a web search for “marijuana warning,” and look at a selected sample of the results.

Oregon man burned in blast making hash oil sues butane businesses

PORTLAND, Ore. — An Oregon medical marijuana patient who was badly burned in an explosion while he was legally using butane as a solvent to make hash oil is suing the makers and sellers of the fuel.

Kevin Tveisme, 28, of Portland, was injured in 2013 when his furnace clicked on, igniting butane vapor. The explosion destroyed his garage and injured a friend, Joseph Westom, who died 18 days later.

Treating marijuana with butane as a solvent extracts the potent hash oil at a low cost, but butane vapor is volatile. Explosions have become more common with the spread of legal medical and recreational marijuana.

As a medical marijuana cardholder, Tveisme was allowed to make hash oil under Oregon law, the lawsuit says.

Inside the legal crusade against Colorado's marijuana laws

ALISON STEWART: Adam Hayward is the sheriff of Deuel County, Nebraska, which is right by the state line with Colorado. Sheriff Hayward says his work hasn’t been the same since Colorado legalized recreational marijuana.

SHERIFF ADAM HAYWARD: Keep it over there. It’s still illegal here. We don’t have a choice. We have to enforce the law.

ALISON STEWART: The sheriff says he’s arrested all sorts of people carrying marijuana back from Colorado along Interstate 76: teenagers making weekend runs to Denver and once a 67 year old grandmother. With each arrest the sheriff collects more and more marijuana. It is cataloged and then stored in the Deuel County jail cell.

Ohio Attorney General studying possible medical marijuana plan

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine is studying the plausibility of a tightly crafted medical marijuana proposal.

DeWine says it's logical as the state debates whether to legalize marijuana to explore what the alternatives are.

DeWine, a Republican who opposes legalizing recreational marijuana, says he's talked to many people around Ohio in favor of medical marijuana if they could be assured it wouldn't be abused.

DeWine said it's worth studying what is happening in other states when it comes to medical marijuana. He stopped short of saying the goal would be to undercut the widespread legalization of the drug in Ohio or what form a proposal might take.

Ecuador could become first country in hemisphere to legalize all drugs

Add Ecuador to a growing list of countries pushing back against the U.S. “war on drugs.”

A ruling party lawmaker recently introduced legislation that would make Ecuador the second country in the world — and the first in the Americas— to decriminalize the personal use of all drugs, from marijuana to cocaine to heroin.

The bill, presented by a lawmaker allied with President Rafael Correa, would regulate the consumption of over 100 substances and create a state agency to control the importation, exportation, production and cultivation of illegal drugs. Anyone interested in using or obtaining drugs would have to register with the agency.

Selling Marijuana To Minors Hurts The Entire Industry And Reform Movement

Some undercover sting operations were conducted at Washington recreational marijuana stores recently, and some of the results were very disappointing. Whereas the stings in Colorado yielded no failures, Washington had four failures. That’s unacceptable. I always hate posting articles like this because I should be highlighting our victories, and not highlighting examples that will no doubt be used by marijuana opponents like Kevin Sabet.

PTSD Pot Study Could Force Uncle Sam to Eat Crow

While Uncle Sam is still not convinced there is enough applicable science behind the healing theories of medical marijuana to allow veterans suffering from debilitating mental conditions to have access to the herb, researchers are finally moving forward with a federally approved study that could result in cannabis being used as an acceptable treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
