It’s only natural the District would see an increased interest in horticulture after it became legal last month to grow marijuana plants. But with the sale of marijuana still illegal, those budding green thumbs have a problem: where to get marijuana seeds?

By hosting two seed exchanges this month, the D.C. Cannabis Campaign hopes to help.

“This will be D.C. residents’ opportunity to share seeds with other adults and start down the path of legally growing your own cannabis in the safety and privacy of your home,” the campaign announced Thursday.

A North Carolina lawmaker has spearheaded a bill that would legalize medical marijuana in the state, citing increased public support for legal weed and the inflow of tax revenue that would come with medical pot sales. State Rep. Kelly Alexander, a Democrat, has attempted such legislation three times before but said he’s more confident than ever that the bill could pass this time around. A rally in support of the bill is expected to take place next week outside the Statehouse in Raleigh, according to WSOC-TV.

Portland City Hall still doesn't know whether the Oregon Legislature will allow it to levy a 10-percent sales tax on marijuana. 

But city officials are already considering another way to pay for local marijuana regulation: a $1,500 permit to operate a pot business in Portland.

The sale of marijuana is legal in some states, and while there are many debates about this substance and adult usage, the evidence is clear that developing children should stay away from pot.

Keeping marijuana out of children’s hands might be more difficult now, however, not just because of legalization, but because marijuana is starting to look more and more like candy.

Cannabis or marijuana possession and sale for recreational use in Nevada could be legalized in November next year as the legislature is expected to let voters decide whether to regulate it like alcohol. Nevada already has decriminalized possession of the substance for people 21 and older and it is legalized for medical use in the state, but possession of marijuana is still a misdemeanor and the sale of it is still a felony. The first offense of possession of 1 ounce or less of marijuana warrants a $600 fine, and subsequent offenses go up to $5,000 or even jail terms.

Last December the Justice Department gave a yellow light to marijuana legalization on tribal land, saying it would treat reservations like states in deciding how to enforce the Controlled Substances Act. Two months later, the very first Tribal Marijuana Conference, held at the Tulalip Resort Casino in Washington, attracted about 250 people, including representatives from 75 or so Indian tribes. They listened intently as speakers (including me) discussed the pros and cons of legalization.

States that have legalized marijuana need to put strong restrictions on the drug's edible products, according to two Stanford law professors.

Attorney General Doug Peterson urged people to "wait and watch" what happens in Colorado before deciding whether to ease Nebraska's marijuana restrictions.

"I'm a little bit surprised how quickly this is moving," Peterson said of the issue, speaking during a Lincoln Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday at the Country Club of Lincoln.

"If people want to go down this road, please at least have enough patience for the state of Nebraska to watch, listen and learn," he said.

Colorado began allowing the sale of marijuana for recreational use last year.

While Peterson didn't cite any specific results of that change, he alluded to an increased burden on education, mental health and law enforcement workers.

LANSING, MI -- Michigan marijuana advocates have confirmed plans to launch a petition drive later this year and hope to put a legalization proposal on the statewide ballot in 2016.

As MLive first reported last month, the Michigan Comprehensive Cannabis Law Reform Initiative Committee is one of two marijuana-related groups eyeing the 2016 ballot.

Board members officially announced the effort on Thursday, indicating that they want to strengthen the state's medical marijuana program, create a regulated system for taxable sales to adults over 21 and facilitate industrial hemp farming.

Committee Chair Jeffrey Hank, a Lansing attorney, said the group is fine-tuning draft language before submitting petitions to the Board of State Canvassers for review.
