Legal marijuana entrepreneurs are finally starting to win the battle against a long-time enemy—the illicit market. For years, black market operators have undercut cannabis prices and taken away part of the cannabis market share.

But a new study has found that the coronavirus epidemic has accelerated the long hoped for reduction in the illegal market. The legal market has especially taken away business from Mexican drug cartels, according to a report from the Congressional Research Service.

It's legal, and now you can buy it anywhere. But if during the pandemic you started ordering pot – like everything else—online, you may have run into some problems.

That's what happened to one Port Alberni man, who asked McLaughlin On Your Side not to identify him. He'd ordered cannabis online before, and decided to try Hello Ganja, a site based out of the United States. 

The site offered a 25 per cent discount on larger orders. 

"I noticed if I bought bulk I could get a fairly decent price, but of course that costs more," he told CTV News.

So the man ordered thousands of dollars' worth of cannabis from the company, expecting it to be shipped to his home. But the package never showed up at his door. 

A new poll revealed that esports, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and racing fans are the most likely cannabis and CBD consumers of all sports fans. 

Conducted by Morning Consult, the survey looked at 1,269 sports fans divided into 14 groups including esports, UFC, tennis, NBA, IndyCar, NHL, NFL, MLB and others. Among those polled, about 35% of esports and UFC fans appear to regularly smoke weed, while 29% said they use CBD often. 

Some 30% of fans that watch racing sports like F1 and MotoGP also reported regular cannabis use. Meanwhile, MotoGP fans are also the most likely sports fans to smoke tobacco as 43% of them told Morning Consult they smoke often or sometimes. 

While advertisers and Hollywood-types have consistently focused on millennials and Gen-Z over the past few years, it turns out that the cannabis industry may want to turn its attention to another group of potential consumers — senior citizens. According to a report from NBC news, baby boomers in the United States, especially men, have seen their cannabis use rise in the past few years.

After being deemed “essential,” cannabis sales spiked. Many states approved temporary cannabis delivery models during shutdowns, a feature of the typical retail experience that was previously unavailable to most cannabis consumers. Now, after seeing the success cannabis businesses found while retailers in other industries suffered, many states are working to make those same e-commerce models permanent.

Canadian household spending on legal cannabis in the second quarter of the year outpaced the illicit market for the first time, marking a significant milestone for the licensed pot industry.

Statistics Canada said Friday that Canadian household spending on recreational cannabis reached $648 million in the second quarter of 2020, an increase of 74 per cent from the same period last year. Meanwhile, spending on medical cannabis was flat at $155 million in the second quarter, StatsCan said. 

Canadian household spending on illicit cannabis fell to a new low of $784 million in the second quarter, StatsCan added. Taken together, the legal cannabis market now accounts for 50.5 per cent of all pot-related spending in Canada.
