Snoop Dogg launches marijuana media company Merry Jane

SAN FRANCISCO — Snoop Dogg is launching a budding digital media business dedicated to cannabis.

The rap artist-turned-tech investor envisions Merry Jane as an online destination for pot smokers and the growing industry that serves them.

Merry Jane will feature celebrity interviews, news coverage of the cannabis industry, as well as helpful tips such as how to identify the best cannabis strain for you. Original video series will explore the cannabis culture, from "Deflowered," which focuses on "first time" experiences, to a cooking show on how to make edibles or food that pairs with cannabis.

Snoop Dogg made the announcement on stage at technology conference TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco.

Making cannabis into a commodity

For another sign that the multibillion-dollar cannabis industry is becoming more corporate as it surfaces from the underground, look no further than Eddie Miller's plan to start a marijuana commodities exchange next year in Colorado.

If it goes well in one of four states with a legal adult recreational market, the 3o-year-old New York entrepreneur will look to California — where medicinal marijuana is legal — because he thinks it is "absurd" that cannabis isn't traded on an open, transparent exchange like other agricultural products. Miller feels it is time for the cannabis industry to move beyond its current quasi-legal state in which farmers toss their product in the back of their car and drive it to dispensaries where they sell it for cash.

A trip back in Twain: Author's hashish exploits in S.F. inspire a revisit

An 1865 San Francisco newspaper report of the author's 'Hasheesh mania' recalls high times not unlike today. Exactly 150 years later, well-appointed dispensaries and a vast array of concentrates have given new meaning to the Gold Rush

SAN FRANCISCO — One hundred and fifty years ago in America, cannabis was legal and regulated. Pharmacies sold patented tinctures and hashish candies.

Richards and Co., located in this city’s iniquitous Barbary Coast, was a popular pharmacy of the day that advertised concentrated cannabis products in newspapers.

One of those newspapers, the San Francisco Dramatic Chronicle, reported the following on Sept. 18, 1865:

Weekly US Cannabis Spot Price Index

U.S. Cannabis Benchmark Spot Index down 9% to $1,948 as harvest begins. The national price decreased by $185 per pound week-on-week, after reaching $2,133 last week, in what currently appears to have been the seasonal peak.

The fall harvest season has begun. Depending on local climate and the strains being grown, outdoor growers will generally harvest from mid-September to mid-November. Kushes and other indica-dominant strains are ready for harvest earlier, while sativa-dominant varieties require more time to mature if they are to be considered high-quality and exhibit fully the characteristics desired by consumers.

Marijuana sparks changes to water business

The growth of the marijuana industry is sparking changes in the water business. Pueblo's Board of Water Works is making new rules to specifically address the influx of cannabis cultivators.

Grows keep popping up throughout the state, and in rural Pueblo County, many of them need to obtain water from somewhere else, like the Pueblo Board of Water Works. The board decided to make amendments before the demand becomes greater than the supply.

The Pueblo water dispensing station is a busy place. It is where customers who live outside city limits get their fill. Lately the lines have gotten longer and longer, held up by larger water haulers, some of which are delivering to marijuana growers.

Pot: Legislators lagging behind voters

'Historic' marijuana bill spotlights the importance of initiatives

SACRAMENTO — It’s commonplace for legislators and commentators to criticize the “excesses” of direct democracy and propose reforms that limit the ability of voters to enact laws — or at least insert lawmakers more deeply into the initiative process. Yet a recently passed bill, approved in the final moments of the recently concluded legislative session, showcases why voters continue to take important matters into their own hands.

California's Pot Biz "Wild West" May End, Massachusetts Could "Head It Off At The Pass"

Legal marijuana commerce - to some extent a reality in 24 states and the District of Columbia - may be the fastest growing industry in the United States. Regardless of what we think about pot use, these facts beg the question: if voters continue to push for legalization, what is the best way to end prohibition of a popular business activity?
