SAN FRANCISCO — Students, accountants, businessmen, housewives and many others in green T-shirts and all wearing the number 420 raced Saturday to change the stereotypical images of marijuana smokers as lazy and lethargic stoners who binge on junk food.

More than 300 people came from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to participate in the 420 Games, an effort to stop the stigmatization of cannabis use through athletic events.

"People who use marijuana have been classified as dumb, lazy, stupid people and with this race we're showing them we're not what they say we are," said Jim McAlpine, a snowboard company executive who founded the events last year. "We want to show them we are motivated, athletic members of society."

Secretary of State Jon Husted said Wednesday the private investor group ResponsibleOhio had collected 320,267 signatures of registered Ohio voters, 14,676 more than necessary to qualify for the general-election ballot. Federal agents have charged another person in connection with bribery inside the California medical cannabis industry.

Today, the Chronicle reports that the federal government has charged Oakland union official Dan Rush with accepting bribes or kickbacks to both help and hinder unionization efforts in the multi-billion industry.

A Harley-Davidson-riding union organizer — once hailed as a "Superman" by the California cannabis movement — has been indicted on federal charges for allegedly taking bribes and rigging the union organizing process.

With medical marijuana legal in 23 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, millions of Americans can now legally obtain cannabis to treat chronic pain and other health conditions.

But many pain patients are leery about asking their doctors for a medical marijuana card or about visiting a marijuana dispensary in some shady part of town.
