There's a medical problem that marijuana might be able to help

In a sun-filled room overlooking a smattering of palm trees, power lines, and cement-and-terracotta bungalows, a 73-year-old recovering alcoholic rolls a joint.

Frank, whose name has been changed for this story, doesn't particularly like the feeling he gets from smoking cannabis, but he doesn't hate it either. And he admits it helps him sleep.

High Sobriety, the southern California rehab center where Frank is staying, incorporates cannabis into its treatment regimen for people with drug and alcohol addiction. Frank hasn't touched scotch, his former drink of choice — or any other alcoholic beverage, for that matter — in 30 days.

Cannabis Infused Candy Floss Edibles Now Exist and They Need to Come to the UK

Proving that the West Coast has the best of everything, a San Diego-based company has just launched a load of cannabis-infused candy floss edibles.

B-Edibles have created cannabis-infused candy floss using 100mg vials of THC.

A far cry from the very chewy, badly baked hash brownies you spend most of your fresher year making, these bad boys are made with organic ingredients and come in a host of fancy flavours.

Rapper 'The Game' Talks About His Cannabis Venture: 'Setting The Standard For Quality Medicine, Patient Care'

Snoop Dogg isn't the only rapper that's made a foray into the cannabis industry. In fact, it seems to be a spreading trend that has caught on with other big names in hip-hop, including Wiz Khalifa, Cypress Hill's B-Real and Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah.

Last year, The Game became the first celebrity to own a marijuana dispensary. This led him to develop branded strains of cannabis flowers and concentrates, which are now sold at the Santa Ana, California location.

Startups Downplay Tobacco as They Talk up Cannabis

Shops patronized by pot smokers have a long tradition of labeling their pipes and vaporizers “for tobacco use only.” But startups developing smoking and vaping gear are basically asking customers to put their weed in it.

Self-described cannabis product companies are raising capital in droves, while funding for startups in the e-cigarette space has all but, well, vaporized. Not a single company that mentioned tobacco, cigarettes or e-cigarettes in its Crunchbase profile raised a disclosed funding round in the past year. By contrast, at least 45 self-described marijuana and cannabis companies did.

Coachella Is Getting a Marijuana “Oasis”

Just because marijuana is legal in a state doesn’t mean it’s legal at a music festival; Coachella attendees are officially prohibited from bringing drugs on festival grounds, even though obtaining legal marijuana in California is as easy as walking into a store and saying, “Hey, I’d like to buy some legal marijuana.” But WeedMaps, described by Tech Crunch as “the Yelp of marijuana dispensaries,” has a plan: TMZ reports that WeedMaps and marketing firm Talent Resources are partnering up to build an “oasis” for weed smokers, located six miles from the festival.

Oakland Setting up Cannabis Permit System to Fail

Chip Moore, the CEO of 4&20 Blackbirds, a cannabis delivery company, exemplifies the equity applicant Oakland’s cannabis ordinance is supposed to help.

But Moore, who is black, hasn’t seen anything but obstacles in his effort to build a legitimate business.

The delays in Oakland’s enactment of its permit system for pot businesses have chased away investors, Moore told me. Because the Oakland City Council can’t get its act together, he hasn’t felt comfortable purchasing a warehouse. And without a place to operate, Moore says he won’t even be eligible for an equity permit.

So this is how the council is creating equity in a multibillion-dollar industry: by making it incredibly difficult for someone like Moore to get off the ground.

Marijuana Equipment Start-Ups Flourish as Large Rivals Avoid Legal Pitfalls

Marijuana’s uncertain legal status across the country has unleashed a network of innovators and entrepreneurs into a space that would ordinarily be filled with name-brand manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies and federally funded research universities.

These small “cannabusinesses” are rushing to fill niches and make money in a field where the drug's illegal status at the federal level has made many start-up basics — from getting a new machine to accessing credit — far more challenging. Colorado, for instance, boasts a cottage industry of innovation because it was one of the first states to legalize recreational cannabis sales to adults, and also has a highly educated, youthful workforce.

Members-Only Cannabis Clubs Promise Privacy and Exclusivity — for a Price

From the outside, it looked like a typical upscale cocktail party. Tucked on a Venice walk street just a stone’s throw from Superba, this fête was complete with an outdoor bar, food stylishly served in Chinese takeout containers and, at the middle of the dining room, a buffet.

Centerpieces constructed from mounds of weed nuggets were displayed in glass jars and surrounded by platters of “adult” brownies and carefully placed displays of cannabis breath mints, macarons and chocolates. At the kitchen counter, a man in a suit jacket and collared shirt taught a meandering group of visitors how to dab.

North Coast colleges wrestle with cannabis education

When Sonoma State University co-hosted a cannabis symposium on March 11, it may have opened the door to a future area of study and research for the school as well as other Northern California higher-education institutions.

The course, “Medical Cannabis: A Clinical Focus,” was believed to be the first medical cannabis course offered by a major U.S. university. Almost 100 people attended the six-hour course, which was primarily targeted to health professionals who wanted to learn more on the still-understudied plant.

“We had a really good, engaged crowd,” said Robert Eyler, dean of SSU’s School of Extended and International Education.
