California: Is UCD going to get into the marijuana research business?

When Proposition 64 passed in California, legalizing recreational marijuana use, many people imagined that UC Davis might get into the pot business. With the No. 1 agricultural school in the nation, as well as a top plant biology program, UCD seems poised to become a cannabis research leader.

Not so fast, says Chief Campus Counsel Jacob Appelsmith.

“Under federal law, (marijuana) is a Schedule 1 drug,” Appelsmith said, as are heroin and LSD. Even as states are legalizing cannabis for both medical and recreational uses, the feds are not moving forward at the same pace.

In San Francisco's 'Puff Pass Paint' class, people make art while getting high on marijuana

More Americans favor legal marijuana than ever before.

As the $6.9 billion industry steps into the light, a new subculture around pot is taking shape. It shrugs off the stoner stereotypes of the past and brings like-minded people together to enjoy the plant in legal, communal settings. In San Francisco, private events centered on cannabis are gaining popularity, including gourmet "wake and bake" brunches and ganja-fueled yoga.

California's Looking for New Tax Revenue? Weed 'em and Reap

THE STONERS HAVE spoken: Recreational marijuana is now legal in eight states and Washington, DC. Thanks to the passage of Proposition 64, California is one of them, making it the country’s largest cannabis market—the state will start issuing sales licenses by January 1, 2018. Now, as long as the Trump administration doesn’t confiscate our stash, regulators, lawyers, and scientists have some big hazy questions to navigate, from how to keep digital tabs on up to 25,000 licensed growers to how to evaluate THC-related DUIs.

A Cannabis-Themed Gym Is Opening in San Francisco This Spring

It may be nearing the end of February, but that doesn’t mean that your New Year’s resolution can’t just be starting. But if that resolution was to start getting to the gym more, you might want to hold out a little bit longer – at least until Power Plant Fitness opens San Francisco’s first cannabis-friendly workout space.

Power Plant is the brainchild of Jim McAlpine, who says that cannabis and working out have long been intertwined, they just haven’t had a platform to interact.

“Cannabis has been part of athletic lifestyles for a long, long time. It’s just been hidden,”  McAlpine told RT News.

What Researchers Found in California's Marijuana

Researchers in Northern California have delivered some unsettling news for marijuana users: It turns out, a sizeable amount of the pot sold in California's medical marijuana dispensaries test positive for mold and bacteria that could be dangerous for patients with compromised immune systems.

Though the study only looked at cannabis sold in Northern California dispensaries, the researchers caution that the problem could be widespread, affecting the whole state and possibly others where the plant is legal for medical or recreational purposes.
