Hayward man arrested in Benicia marijuana investigation

A Hayward man was arrested after 4,859 marijuana plants and three pounds of processed marijuana was found at a warehouse on Stone Road in Benicia Thursday morning.

Thuy Dinh, 34, was taken into custody and arrested by Solano County Detectives after he tried to flee the warehouse through the back door. He was booked into the Solano County Jail for cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale, conspiracy to cultivate, distribution of marijuana and resisting arrest.

The Solano County Sheriff's Office said the warehouse was divided into 10 rooms, calling it "a very large and sophisticated marijuana growing and processing operation."

US judge won't remove marijuana from most-dangerous drug list

A federal judge in Sacramento on Wednesday upheld the constitutionality of a 1970 federal law that classifies marijuana as a dangerous drug akin to LSD and heroin.

U.S. District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller took the extraordinary step of holding a five-day hearing on the question late last year, raising the hopes of activists that she might strike down the classification.

The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, known as NORML, said Mueller concluded that it was up to Congress to decide the matter.

Harshing Your Mellow: Top 10 Red Flags In The Marijuana Industry

Over the past five years, I’ve had my fair share of experiences with both the good and the bad in the marijuana industry. To the Bitter End: The 9 States Where Marijuana Will Be Legalized Last

We know the end is coming, but pot prohibition is going to have to be undone state by state. Here are the ones least likely to jump on the bandwagon.

Marijuana prohibition in the US is dying, but it isn't going to vanish in one fell swoop. Even if Congress were to repeal federal pot prohibition, state laws criminalizing the plant and its users would still be in effect—at least in some states.

And it's probably a pretty safe bet that Congress isn’t going to act until a good number of states, maybe more than half, have already legalized it. That process is already underway and is likely to gather real momentum by the time election day 2016 is over.

The marijuana industry’s newest customers are sick and elderly dogs

A day before a scheduled vet appointment to euthanize her dog, Wendy Mansfield decided to try one last resort to alleviate the chronic pain of her 15-year-old labrador mix: cookies from a marijuana dispensary made specifically for ailing dogs.

Kali, a mild-mannered 80-pound rescue, was never much of a complainer. But she often licked her paws—an obvious sign of pain, according to her vet—which was typically accompanied by bouts of coughing because of the shedding fur that got in her throat. One cookie and 20 minutes later, the licking suddenly stopped.

Congress told the Justice Department to stop fighting medical marijuana. It didn't work.

Charles Lynch was running a legal medical marijuana dispensary in California — but that didn't stop the feds from raiding his store in 2007, throwing him in jail, and later placing him on home arrest, rendering him unable to find work and, as a result, leading to the loss of his home.

"I have no work and no money," Lynch, 52, told the New York Times's Erik Eckholm, "and I'm depending on others to survive."

Your Marijuana Habit Is Still Sucking California Dry

Over the past few weeks, all eyes have been on California as the super-parched state endures its fourth year of record-breaking drought. In mid-March, after officials announced new, far-reaching water restrictions for residents and businesses, attention turned towards the worst offenders when it comes to water use. Earlier this week, a host of articles centered on the conveniently easy-to-remember fact that it takes an estimated one gallon of water to produce a single almond.

High Times editor: ‘Colorado cannabis industry is an economic miracle’

High Times magazine’s New York-rooted editor-in-chief Dan Skye has spent plenty of time in Colorado researching and photographing the state’s medical and recreational systems, but his current, pre-Cannabis Cup trip to the state has been uncommonly eye-opening.

“The Colorado cannabis industry is an economic miracle,” Skye said Monday from a stop in Pueblo, where he’s meeting cannabis business owners and reporting on the state’s first-of-its-kind legalization. “Everyone in the United States is following Colorado’s lead.”
