Cannabis Legislation 2017: We’re Tracking All Legalization Bills

Most state legislatures reconvene in early January, and by February they’re in full swing, moving some bills forward and killing others in committee. This year 27 state legislatures are considering bills pertaining to cannabis in some form. (Well, okay: 26. Mississippi had two medical marijuana bills, but they’re already dead.) Some states are pushing full adult-use legalization. Others are pulling back on medical legalization measures adopted by voters last November. We’ll keep tracking them as they live and die. Most state legislatures adjourn by early June. Stay tuned.

Classic Marijuana Sales Are Tumbling as a New Way of Getting High Takes Over

"Do you even vape, bro?" In California, the answer is increasingly, "Yes."

Vaping is an alternative to smoking that involves inhaling vapor from an electronic device. Between 2015 and 2016, sales of marijuana oil cartridges, which are used for vaping, soared 400% among customers who use delivery service Eaze, dubbed the "Uber for weed."

Vaporizers' explosive growth may be a key driver in the falling sales of marijuana flower, the fluffy, green stuff you smoke, according to Eaze's second annual "State of Cannabis" report.

Marijuana Access Linked to Decreased Alcohol, Opioid Usage, says Eaze

Coming home after a long day at work has become synonymous with pouring a big glass of wine, but is this long-held American tradition changing?

California-based medical marijuana technology company Eaze just released a new report which shows that alcohol drinkers in California are turning to marijuana as a safer, more natural alternative for alleviating everyday stress.

Many people would typically open a bottle of post-work wine around 7 p.m., but, according to the 2016 report from Eaze, orders for medical marijuana spiked nightly at the same time.

Marijuana farmer's market held in California

Marijuana farmers markets are becoming more and more popular in California.

On Saturday, a farmers market in San Diego featured traditional foods like cotton candy, sushi, and burritos, but all infused with marijuana.

To get in, you had to show your ID and have a medical marijuana card.

Voters in California recently approved the use of recreational marijuana with the passage of Prop 64.

How Marijuana Is Transforming the Event Industry

From “bud bars” to cannabis-infused dinners, find out how marijuana is being used in states that have legalized it.

Delay in Tax System Imperils California's Rush to Govern Cannabis Economy

The regulatory and taxing system that will be needed to govern California’s newly legalized marijuana industry may not be in place by a key deadline next year, imperiling the state’s rush to oversee a booming $7 billion cannabis economy.

Multiple state agencies, including the Bureau of Medical Cannabis Regulation, are scrambling to develop rules for licensing and taxing cannabis cultivators and other businesses in the industry.

But State Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg is among those concerned that the legal framework will not be in place by the Jan. 1 deadline set by Proposition 64, the marijuana legalization measure approved by voters three months ago.

California’s Favorite Cannabis Delivery Startup Has 2016’s Weed Trends Hidden in Its Sales Data

Gorilla Glue #4 and vaporizer cartridges have Eaze drivers busy in the Golden State.

With recreational use already legal, and a more open retail market coming next year, California has one of, if not the biggest cannabis market in the world. To serve that market, weed delivery startup Eaze came on the scene in 2014, and has since amassed a clientele of 25,000 medical customers. Because no central marijuana database or strict regulation exists yet, a look at Eaze’s sales date and a survey of 5,000 users - or their “State of Cannabis” report - gives some much needed insight into the buying habits of California’s medical marijuana patients.

San Francisco College Students Will Soon Be Able to Take a Class on Recreational Marijuana

Now that recreational marijuana is legal in San Francisco, college students will have a chance to learn all about the budding industry.

The City College of San Francisco announced that it would offer marijuana-focused curriculum starting January 2018. "Obviously, with the potential growth of this industry being substantial, particularly in California, we want to offer access to this growing industry," City College spokesman Jeff Hamilton told the San Francisco Examiner last month.

Cannabis Capitalists, Making Money on Marijuana

Legal cannabis is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States with a projected annual growth rate of 31%. The total market projection for legal cannabis sales in 2020 is $21.8 billion.

Many entrepreneurs in San Diego are looking to capitalize on the cannabis business boom.

“You keep your wine in wine fridge, your liquor in a bar, your cigars in a humidor, why are we keeping our high quality cannabis in a shoebox under the bed,” said Whitney Beatty, Founder and C.E.O. of Apothecarry, a stylish storage system designed to keep cannabis at its optimum condition.

California: Contaminated Cannabis? UC Davis Researchers Find Mold, Fungi in Medical Marijuana

In uneasy news for medical marijuana users, UC Davis researchers have identified potentially lethal bacteria and mold on samples from 20 Northern California pot dispensaries, leading them to warn patients with weakened immune systems to avoid smoking, vaping or inhaling aerosolized cannabis.

“For the vast majority of cannabis users, this is not of great concern,” said Dr. George Thompson, professor in the UC Davis Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology. But those with weakened immune systems – such as from leukemia, lymphoma, AIDS or cancer treatments – could unwittingly be exposing themselves to serious lung infections when they smoke or vape medical marijuana. “We strongly advise them to avoid it,” Thompson said.
