Cannabis producers Tilray and Hexo form joint venture

Canadian cannabis producers Tilray Brands (TSX:TLRY) and Hexo Corp. (TSX:HEXO) are forming a new strategic partnership.

The joint venture will see Tilray take a minority stake in its financially troubled rival Hexo. In a news release, Tilray said it will acquire up to $211 million U.S. of Hexo’s debt, an investment that will give it the right to own 37% of Hexo.

In addition to the debt deal, the two companies said their joint venture will help the companies produce cannabis products such as pre-rolls, beverages and edibles within the next two years while leading to $50 million in cost efficiencies.

Has Aurora Cannabis become a better buy than Canopy Growth?

Aurora Cannabis (NASDAQ: ACB) and Canopy Growth (NASDAQ: CGC) are two of the top cannabis companies in Canada. But both businesses have struggled in recent years in growing their operations and staying out of the red.

In their most recent quarterly results, the two companies appeared to be moving in different directions. Aurora has been making significant progress in strengthening its bottom line while Canopy Growth remains nowhere near breakeven.

Veterans Affairs Canada paid for nearly $116 million worth of cannabis for medical purposes in 2021

Although the number of veterans in Canada covered by Veterans Affairs Canada’s (VAC) medical cannabis reimbursement program continues to increase every year.

Veterans Affairs Canada’s cannabis for medical purposes reimbursement policy allows approved veterans to be reimbursed for up to three grams a day at a fixed cost of nor more than $8.50 a gram. 

Although the program initially had no limit on how much cannabis could be reimbursed, the three-gram policy was implemented in November 2016, in large part to address rising costs and very high daily gram totals from some who were using the program.

About one in six Canadians are exposed to cannabis smoke in their homes: study

Smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing “should protect residents from involuntary exposure to all types of second-hand smoke.”

A new study estimates about 17 per cent of Canadians living in detached single-family homes and multi-unit housing (MUH) in 2019 were exposed to second-hand cannabis smoke (SHCS).

That proved better and worse, respectively, than U.S. residents living in legal and illegal cannabis states, investigators note in the pre-proof study published online this week in the peer-reviewed journal, Preventive Medicine.

Study finds 40% of motorists have driven under influence of alcohol or cannabis

Impaired driving is the most prominent factor for serious road crashes in Canada

Over 40% of drivers have consumed alcohol and smoked cannabis and gotten behind the wheel, a new U.S. study found.

The latest MADD Canada statistics from 2019 show there were 86,864 alcohol and drug-related charges laid against drivers.

Statistics Canada says the police-reported impaired driving rate increased by 19% in 2019 from 2018.

“Alcohol and cannabis are two of the most common substances involved in impaired driving and motor vehicle crashes (in the United States),” said Priscila Dib, a postdoctoral research fellow in the epidemiology department at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York City.
