A growing number of Canadians who consume cannabis are obtaining it from the legal marketplace, according to data published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. Investigators affiliated with the University of Waterloo, School of Public Health Sciences surveyed nearly 5,000 Canadian adults who acknowledged having purchased cannabis flowers within the past year.

Local politicians, Health Canada officials field cannabis concerns during forum; 'All municipalities are struggling and frustrated,' says Oro-Medonte mayor

Inconsistent policies and laws among various levels of government are causing challenges and concerns when it comes to cannabis operations in municipalities.

That’s one of the messages delivered Thursday evening during a virtual information session hosted by Doug Shipley, MP for Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte.

Since being elected in 2019, a year after the federal Cannabis Act came into effect, Shipley has heard a number of concerns from Oro-Medonte residents “affected” by cannabis operations in the township.

Cannabis legalisation does not lead to increased psychosis or schizophrenia, Canadian study shows

drug

One of the arguments used all across the world against the legalisation of cannabis, that its use leads to increased cases of schizophrenia and psychosis, was dealt a blow this week. Evidence from a Canadian study shows that hospital admission for cases of cannabis-induced schizophrenia and psychosis have not risen since the Canadian government legalised adult cannabis use in 2018.

In the study, published in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, researchers state that they aimed to directly address the often reported fear “that legislation might increase the burden of transient and persistent psychotic illnesses in society.”

4 Pot Stocks to Avoid Like the Plague in 2022

cannabis

Despite marijuana being a fast-growing industry, these cannabis stocks are buzzkills.

Although it's had its ups and downs, cannabis is forecast to be one of the fastest-growing industries over the next five years. According to cannabis-focused analytics company BDSA, global marijuana sales are projected to hit $62.1 billion by 2026, representing a doubling from the estimated $31 billion believed to have been sold globally in 2021.

However, not all marijuana stocks are going to be winners. While the industry is full of promising growth stocks, some of which are already achieving recurring profitability, the following four pot stocks, all of which have a Canadian focus, should be avoided like the plague in 2022

Is 2022 The Year The Canadian Cannabis Industry Finally Starts To Hit Its Growth Phase?

canadian cannabis flag

Although recreational cannabis has been legal in Canada for three years, the market continues to face challenges.

Municipal bans on cannabis brick-and-mortar retailers in Canadian provinces have slowed down the growth of the industry by forcing consumers to drive long distances to municipalities that have a large number of cannabis brick-and-mortar storefronts.

The decision to ban the opening of cannabis retail stores has benefited the illicit market and we hope to see a decrease in the number of municipalities that have banned the opening of cannabis retail stores in 2022. (Click Here for full article)

Tilray rally fades as investor doubts about pot stocks prevail

phone

Canadian cannabis titan Tilray Inc. fell for a third straight day, surrendering much of a rally posted earlier this week after earnings that were buoyed by acquisitions and a rebranding -- moves aimed at strengthening its global reach in the face of stiff competition at home.

Canada’s marijuana-market leader is still up about 4% this week after the shares jumped 14% Monday, when it reported better-than-expected results and said it was repositioning itself as a global consumer packaged-goods “powerhouse.” Demand for its cannabis brands, craft beer and hemp products boosted profits, the company said.

Hygrovest significantly outperforms dip in Canadian cannabis market, looks to diversify with new investments

market

Hygrovest has weathered a decline in the Canadian cannabis market with outperforming assets, but now looks to reduce risk by diversifying assets into non-cannabis sectors following approval for a broadened investment mandate at the company's AGM.

Hygrovest Ltd (ASX:MMJ) has significantly outperformed a declining Canadian cannabis market, the investment holding group’s net asset value (NAV) decreasing just 13% compared to a 46% decline in the benchmark over the same period.

The specialist investment company is now looking to close the 61% gap in its share price to NAV ratio by working with its largest investment, Weed Me, to achieve liquidity during 2022 and realising underperforming or illiquid investments.

‘Arbitrary’ cutoffs of THC levels make it difficult to measure impaired driving

girl behind the wheel

After marijuana was legalized in Canada, more drivers in car crashes tested positive for the drug, new research finds.

As more states legalize marijuana for recreational use, it’s become more common for people to have the drug in their  system, leaving public health officials grappling with a thorny question: What constitutes impaired driving?

For alcohol, the cutoff is uniform: A blood alcohol concentration above 0.08 percent. But there is no standard cutoff for THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana. And even in places that do institute a cutoff, it’s unclear whether exceeding the limit constitutes impairment, experts say.
