The (Arrested) Rise of Craft Cannabis in Canada

It’s no secret that the rollout of cannabis legalization has underperformed in countries like Canada. Since legalization in October of 2018, industry experts have warned that the projections of the big cannabis firms and venture capitalists far exceeded the expected demand from the legal market.

Canopy books $829M loss in Q3, expects profits to come next year

Canopy Growth Corp. reported Tuesday its third-quarter revenue rose 23 per cent to $152.5 million, beating expectations, yet the company sees its elusive goal of becoming profitable still a year away.

The pot producer said it lost $829.3 million in the three months ending Dec. 31, roughly half of which was due to impairment charges related to the closure of several production facilities last year. A year earlier, Canopy posted a net loss of $109 million.

What is lab accreditation and what could it mean for your cannabis?

For nearly a decade in the early 2000s, Flin Flon, Manitoba, was home to Canada’s “marijuana mine.”

Saskatchewan company Prairie Plant Systems held an exclusive contract to produce cannabis deep within an unused section of the Trout Lake Mine, a location reportedly selected as a grow site for its security.

Andrew Adams, the former director of Health Canada’s drug analysis service, oversaw the testing for the cannabis that was grown in the mine shaft.

Beyond the cannabinoid content, the government tested for metals, fungal toxins, microbial and chemical contaminants, and other foreign matter. According to Adams, the data was freely accessible and posted on a Health Canada website.

Aurora CEO seeks capital flexibility; Cronos to launch lab-grown pot product

The time was right for Aurora Cannabis Inc. to strike with yet another bought deal last week. The cannabis company looked to take advantage of a recent run in its stock amid a broad investor move into cannabis at the beginning of the year.

The net result is an additional US$137 million in proceeds to Aurora's balance sheet, albeit with some additional dilution to the company's stock. While some shareholders may be growing tired of Aurora's equity moves, the additional capital will give the company some more flexibility when looking south of the border for additional deals, its chief executive officer told BNN Bloomberg. One analyst estimated the move now gives Aurora roughly $700 million in capital to use for further investment.
