Cronos to sell lab-grown pot products in Canada this year: CEO

Cronos Group Inc. plans to release the first lab-grown cannabis products to the Canadian recreational market later this year, a move that could usher in a new wave of cheap pot that isn't derived from the plant at all. 

While Cronos Executive Chairman Mike Gorenstein didn't provide specifics, he said this year the company will commercially release products containing cannabinoids created using biosynthesis, an engineering process similar to brewing beer that can make THC and CBD for pennies on the dollar.

Canadian man jailed for attempting to enter Singapore with a cannabis vape pen

A Canadian man who works in Singapore has been jailed for 16 weeks after trying to enter the country with a cannabis vape pen that contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

According to a report from TODAY, 29-year-old Daniel Moher was gifted the pen, which contained 0.35 grams of liquid, by a friend in Canada. Moher then attempted to conceal it inside a deodorant bottle when he returned to Singapore.

The court heard that Moher has been grieving the loss of another friend and was consuming cannabis to cope.

Study: Cannabis legalization leading to a decline in opioid prescriptions

A study set to publish in the journal, Applied Health Economics and Health Policy, has found that legalizing cannabis has led to a “marked decline” in the volume of opioids prescribed across Canada.

Nearly 18,000 Canadians died from an opioid-related overdose from January 2016 to June 2020, according to the federal Public Health Infobase.

CannTrust enters pact to settle class action lawsuits from illicit production scandal

CannTrust Holdings Inc. said Wednesday it will put $50 million into a trust that will be earmarked for investors who filed class-action lawsuits against the company after it received a non-compliance order from Health Canada.

The move is to cover claims stemming from a production scandal that led federal regulators to suspend its ability to grow and produce legal pot.

The company said that the "restructuring support agreement" it entered into with plaintiffs still needs to be negotiated to finalize "in good faith."
