Canada's Weed Sales Just Hit a New High -- Here's Why That Hasn't Helped Pot Stocks

Earlier this month, cannabis enthusiasts celebrated a green sweep in the United States. Five states placed marijuana legalization initiatives or amendments on their ballots, and every single recreational weed and medical cannabis measure passed. By the end of election night, the number of medical marijuana-legal states had increased to 36, with 15 of these states also allowing for the consumption and/or retail sale of adult-use cannabis.

But more than two years before the United States celebrated its green sweep, Canada was rolling out the green carpet for adult-use cannabis sales. On Oct. 17, 2018, the Cannabis Act officially became law in our neighbor to the north.

Cannabis beverage challenge: Can cannabis beverages overcome the tobaccoization of cannabis?

Although infused beverages have been predicted to shake things up in the legal market, Canada’s cannabis companies are experiencing yet another regulatory bottleneck.

Challenged to create brand identity in the flower market, the promise of many big cannabis companies resides in the ability of their cannabis beverages (HEXO with TRUSS, Canopy with Tweed and Houseplant, Tilray with Fluent, and Aphria with SweetWater Brewing, etc.) to win over the non-cannabis consumer. For this to happen, cannabis beverage companies must escape the ‘tobaccoization’ of cannabis.

Canadian Cannabis Company Buys Craft Brewery

Aphria said it has entered an agreement to buy Atlanta’s Sweetwater Brewing Co. for around US$300 million, which is well known in the state for its stoner-focused marketing.

Global brewers have invested time and resources in north America’s burgeoning cannabis drinks industry within the past five years, with most launching beverages that are infused with THC – the psychoactive component of the plant – or CBD, which is regularly cited as reducing stress or muscle pain.

Sweetwater, which was founded in 1997 by two university friends, does not make THC or CBD beers yet, but does target drinkers with an interest in cannabis through its 420 beer brands and an annual festival held on 20 April.

Could Canada follow Oregon’s lead on drug decriminalization?

Oregon residents made history this week, with nearly 60 per cent of voters saying ‘yes’ to Oregon Measure 110, the Drug Decriminalization and Addiction Treatment Initiative.

The measure reclassifies simple drug possession as a Class E violation. Rather than face jail time, individuals found in possession of Schedule I-IV drugs, including heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine, will need to complete a health assessment and pay a US$100 fine.
