Aurora reports $3.3 billion loss for full year, $1.86 billion for Q4

Miguel Martin has his work cut out for him just weeks into his new job as Aurora Cannabis Inc.'s chief executive.

The Edmonton-based cannabis company reported Tuesday that it incurred $3.3 billion in losses in its 2020 fiscal year, including $1.86 billion in its latest quarter due to large impairment charges.

Martin, who was named CEO on Sept. 8, conceded that the company had slipped from its top position in the Canadian consumer cannabis market.

The fall is forcing him to stage an immediate overhaul even after Aurora laid off thousands of workers this year.

"The company really was distracted in a lot of ways by the reset both on the people side and on the production side," Martin told analysts.

Canada Launches Comedic Campaign Against High Driving

New data shows 1 in 5 Canadians have recently driven high or with someone who was.

In an attempt to convince Canadians not to drive after eating a marijuana edible, officials took a left turn by making some jokes. The Canadian Automobile Association released a new set of comedic public service announcement videos warning the dangers of being behind the wheel. According to the organization, one in five Canadian say they have driven high or rode in the car of someone who was.

Pot-infused products fail to draw in new consumers, survey finds

New cannabis users account for one-quarter of all legal Canadian consumers, but many appear to be eschewing infused products originally aimed at drawing them into the market, according to a survey released Tuesday.

The survey conducted by Chicago-based Brightfield Group found that "newbies," or those who have only consumed cannabis since the drug was legalized in late 2018, made up 25 per cent of legal pot purchases in the second quarter of the year, a sign that the regulated market is garnering increased consumer interest in Canada.

B.C. unveils new cannabis sales programs to help small, Indigenous growers

The B.C. government says it will launch three cannabis programs over the next two years to help small and Indigenous growers compete with larger rivals.

A farm−gate program would allow growers to sell their products at stores located at their production sites.

Another program would allow small cannabis producers, licensed by Health Canada, to deliver cannabis directly to authorized retailers.

The government did not say how it will define small producers, but says nurseries will be included in the policy.

Both programs are expected to launch in 2022, a year after the province hopes to start an initiative that will highlight cannabis from Indigenous producers in stores and online.

National Cannabis Working Group calls on government to embrace another kind of ‘green recovery’

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s National Cannabis Working Group is calling on the federal government to embrace the economic upside of Canada’s regulated cannabis industry in the COVID-19 economic recovery plan it will be presenting to Canadians this fall.

Investments by the legal cannabis industry have created thousands of good paying jobs in communities of all sizes across Canada, and added an additional $8.3 billion to Canada’s GDP as of July 2019. The industry is in a position to contribute much more to Canada’s economy, as Statistics Canada recently determined when it reported that legal cannabis sources still represent less than half of all consumption in Canada.

Is it time to start thinking about greener ways to package cannabis?

When Canada legalized cannabis in 2018, there was so much thought that went into production and logistics that packaging became an afterthought. Until it wasn’t.

Excessive, bulky packaging and plastic containers soon became the most uncool elements that both licensed producers and consumers had to deal with.

As per federal Cannabis Regulations, there are several mandates that licensed producers have to accommodate while packaging and selling cannabis products for the masses.

Legislating THC in Food

As laws for cannabis use change, so do the laws that govern the particular cannabinoids that make up the plant, namely CBD and THC, and how and where they are used. Whereas CBD has already been regulated differently in many places, THC is often left with no regulation at all when it comes to use in edible products.

It has become more commonplace for CBD to be separated from the rest of the cannabis plant, and regulated differently, with the main reason being that since it contains no psychoactive properties, it shouldn’t be treated the same as substances that are psychoactive. With more recreational markets opening, and more food-based products hitting the market, the question of how THC is legislated in food is becoming more of a question.
