OPP warning public to be on the lookout for outdoor marijuana grow-ops

CALEDON, Ont. - Provincial police say summer means another season for outdoor marijuana grow operations and are asking for the public's help in identifying possible growers and grow locations.

Police say marijuana plants have already been planted during the months of May and June.

OPP say common locations for grow-ops are swamps, corn fields, and wooded areas, though growers may also rent a rural property with acreage.

Investigators say the growers return to maintain the plants about every two weeks until they are ready for harvesting in the fall.

Could ecstasy be a potential treatment for PTSD?

The first clinical trial in Canada is under way to test whether the party drug could be part of a treatment for those with PTSD

For the first time in four decades, an illegal psychedelic drug is being clinically tested in Canada. A team of psychiatrists and psychologists in Vancouver are giving 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA)—better known as the party drug ecstasy—to 12 people suffering from chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The drug will be administered in therapeutic sessions to help them deal with memories they have found difficult or impossible to confront, as part of a group of clinical trials, including in the U.S. and Israel.

Your government on weed: Health Canada to spend another $1.5 million on anti-drug ads

OTTAWA – Health Canada is spending $1.5 million to air recycled ads on prescription drugs and pot in the run-up to the fall federal election.

The federal health agency started re-airing the ads Monday that will run on TV and online until Aug. 8.

Health Minister Rona Ambrose says the ads illustrate the harmful effects of prescription drug abuse and the impact of marijuana use on the developing brains of teenagers.

“Our government will continue to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse and encourage youth to choose a drug-free lifestyle,” Ambrose said in a statement.

The government will turn off the publicly funded advertising taps when the writ drops, expected after Labour Day as a result of October’s fixed-election date.

Cannabis is a Medicine - A Response to the Globe and Mail's Margaret Wente

Cam Battley, Bedrocan

For more than a year, Canada has had a federally-regulated medical cannabis regime. It’s a system unique in the world – tightly regulated by Health Canada, market-based with multiple competing licensed producers, and arguably represents Canadian leadership in an emerging area of medical research and treatment. Our national medical cannabis system works well, specifically because it treats cannabis as medicine.

Hallucinogenic salvia set to be banned in Canada

The federal government has promised to implement tighter regulations on salvia and it’s finally taking actions. But as Laura Stone reports, critics say it’s not the right approach.

OTTAWA – The Conservative government is expected to fulfill a four-year-old promise to add salvia to its list of controlled substances, Global News has learned.

After making the promise in 2011, Health Canada is set to add the sage specifies S. divinorum to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, making it illegal to possess, traffic and produce it.

“We’ve done our due diligence, we’ve done the studies, we know that these are used by young kids as hallucinogens,” Paul Calandra, parliamentary secretary to the prime minister, said in an interview.

"The new Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations simplified the process for patients and physicians and removed some barriers to access," said Dan Rego, president of MarijuanaMedInfo. "What has been lacking is the provision of an educational initiative on the clinical use of cannabinoids for healthcare professionals and the public."

Developers race to create the first ‘marijuana breathalyzer’

Cannabix Technologies Inc. is the developer of the patent pending Cannabix Marijuana Breathalyzer for law enforcement and the workplace.

As cannabis bans are relaxed in more U.S. states, the race is on to develop an instant roadside breathalyzer for police to test drivers who may be taking the “high” road.

Vancouver-based Cannabix Technologies Inc, founded by a retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, expects to be first out of the gate with a “pot breathalyzer” - a handheld device similar to those used to detect alcohol.

Cannabix won’t give an estimate of when its product might go on sale, but has a prototype undergoing in-house testing.
