OTTAWA – Hundreds of medical marijuana users in British Columbia have been told the pot they thought could help them might harm them because it’s contaminated with bacteria.

Health Canada says Tilray, a Nanaimo supplier, is telling clients to stop using its Sativa House Blend, Hybrid House Blend and Indica House Blend.

The pot was contaminated with enterobacter, which is not associated with an acute health risk, said Joshua Eades, Tilray’s chief science officer.

He said the company doesn’t know where the bacteria originated.

“We are undergoing a top-to-bottom, rigorous review of our sanitation practices and procedures,” he said. “And we’ll be doing a root-cause analysis to understand what caused these results.”

Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana, but scientific research into its appropriate uses has lagged. Dr. Mark Ware would like to change that.

Dr. Ware, 50, is the director of the Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids and the director of clinical research of the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit of McGill University Health Center. Medical marijuana has been legal in Canada for 16 years, and Dr. Ware, a practicing physician, studies how his patients take the drug and under what conditions it is effective.

Tilray is voluntarily recalling three marijuana for medical purposes products due to positive bacterial testing: Sativa House Blend (Lot number: 5411 9952 8740 9514), Hybrid House Blend (Lot number: 6889 8271 1515 4149) and Indica House Blend (Lot number: 3470 2895 9118 1906).

During the course of a regular inspection conducted under the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations, Health Canada inspectors tested the above products to ensure compliance with the regulation.

Tilray’s clients should consult with a healthcare professional if they have concerns about their health related to the use of this product.

Medical marijuana is going to cost us

And so the levee breaks.

The man to break it is called Jonathan Zaid.

A student at the University of Waterloo. An earnest, likeable young man with an almost unbelievable story to tell.

Jonathan Zaid was diagnosed at the age of 14 with New Daily Persistent Headache (NDPH), a medical condition so poorly understood doctors debate everything from forms of treatment to whether it should be viewed as a syndrome or diagnosis.

Montreal police are investigating after a fire ripped through a fourplex in Lasalle overnight, leading to the discovery of 40 marijuana plants in one of the units.

The fire broke out at about 1 a.m. on the first floor of the building on John F. Kennedy Street. 

Firefighters say it quickly spread to the second floor and the roof. 

Montreal police spokesman Raphael Bergeron said cannabis was found in the building.

"They discovered a plantation," Bergeron said.

One person went to hospital with burns and another man was arrested.

In all, five people were forced from the building.

Bergeron said firefighters are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. The investigation has been handed over to police. 

Turning medical marijuana into cookies, tea or oil should not be a criminal act that risks jail time, a B.C. lawyer told the Supreme Court of Canada Friday in the first ever hearing of its kind.
