The former head baker of the Victoria Cannabis Buyers’ Club heads to Ottawa today in hopes of overturning Canada’s medical marijuana laws and securing the right for patients to use cannabis oils, cookies, teas and lotions.

Owen Edward Smith will appear before the Supreme Court of Canada on Friday after victories at the B.C. Court of Appeal and B.C. Supreme Court.

It’s the first time Canada’s highest court has heard a medical marijuana case.

Smith was arrested at a Victoria apartment in 2009 and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking THC after police found pot cookies and other cannabis-infused foodstuffs on the premises.

TORONTO – Supermarkets in Ontario may finally be allowed to sell beer and wine to its customers in the near future, according to a report in the Toronto Star.

The newspaper cites sources saying the Liberal government is eager at loosening the quasi-monopoly held by the Beer Store and in turn offer hundreds of Ontario supermarkets the ability to stock their shelves with alcohol.

Sources tell the Star the move will likely be announced in the upcoming spring budget.

OSHAWA -- Oshawa council got a crash course on the issue of medical marijuana at a recent council special education session by members of the Oshawa Accessibility Advisory Committee.

In 2013 the committee created a medical marijuana working group and members of the group addressed council on March 2 and delivered a slideshow presentation on issues related to medical marijuana.

Working group members Ben Fudge and Marko Ivancicevic outlined the history of medical marijuana in Canada and highlighted some of the issues that affect municipalities, including zoning for legal marijuana production facilities and the licensing of vapor lounges.

Mr. Ivancicevic explains the motivation behind asking for a special council meeting.

Despite receiving “final” rejection for a licence to operate a medical marijuana operation by Health Canada, it appears a Lakeshore-based company will proceed with legal challenges against both the federal and municipal governments.

CEN Biotech has been officially notified by the federal government they will not get a licence to operate what the company touted as Canada’s largest medical marijuana operation.

The company last month received “notice of intent to refuse” from Health Canada and days later in response launched a court challenge requesting a judicial review of the federal government’s decision.

Moncton company is 1 of only 16 in the country that makes and sells medical marijuana

Moncton company OrganiGram is mixing marijuana and jobs.

The legal marijuana grower has created 30 jobs since setting up shop and it says another 25 are on the way in April.

OrganiGram is one of only 16 companies in the country that makes and sells medical marijuana.

The company mailed out its first major shipment of marijuana just a few weeks ago and it has eight different strains currently in production.

The plants grow in the sterile facility with the help of controlled heat, lights and humidity, while staff trim the plants. The buds produced are then dried, sold to patients and shipped through Canada Post.

Popular over-the-counter remedies, approved by Health Canada as "safe and effective," may be supported by little to no scientific evidence that the products work, an investigation by CBC’s Marketplace reveals.

Canadians spend $2.4 billion a year on natural health products.While some products may have clinical trials or other scientific evidence to support their claims, many do not require any scientific proof, and there’s little way for consumers to tell the difference.

"It's frustrating that the government standards are not protecting the public the way they should be," Dr. Matthew Stanbrook, deputy editor of the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ), told Marketplace co-host Erica Johnson.

It's no secret that professional sports is big business, but the pressures put on some team doctors to nurse high-priced star players back to health is leading to the over-prescription of drugs and ultimately harming the athletes in the long run, an investigation by the fifth estate reveals.

“I think it’s pretty clear to me, and in talking to people who have been team doctors, that ethically [doctors] want to say, 'We’re there for the player and health is first,' but that’s not the reality of pro sports," says Arthur Caplan, a professor at the Sports and Society Program at New York University.

"The reality of pro sports is winning is first, because money is first.”

One chef is giving a new meaning to pot roasts by creating a range of cannabis-infused dishes. 

Mary Jean Dunsdon, who hosts cookery show, Baking A Fool Of Myself has made a name for herself online for her sultry Nigella-Lawson style delivery and presentation. 

With the help of her elderly mother, the 35-year-old, who goes by the name Watermelon, uses weed to tempt taste buds with everything from marijuana-infused ice cream and burgers to margaritas. 

The chef has been cooking pot-infused treats for more than 13 years.

'There is still a stereotype of marijuana smokers as a dumb surfer guy or a gangster but it's just not the case any more,' she said.

'The marijuana market is growing rapidly, I think its going to be the new money.
