Colorado County Funds College Scholarship With Marijuana Money

Budding scholars, rejoice.

Commissioners in Pueblo County, Colorado, on Monday signed off on what they’re calling the “world’s first cannabis-funded scholarship.”

The fund of approximately $475,000 will be available for high school students in Pueblo County who wish to attend Pueblo Community College or Colorado State University-Pueblo in fall 2017.

Of that funding, about $425,000 comes from cannabis excise tax revenue, which is a one-time county-level tax on all marijuana grown in Pueblo County. A state government-run scholarship program makes up the remaining $49,664.

Cannabis Legislation 2017: We’re Tracking All Legalization Bills

Most state legislatures reconvene in early January, and by February they’re in full swing, moving some bills forward and killing others in committee. This year 27 state legislatures are considering bills pertaining to cannabis in some form. (Well, okay: 26. Mississippi had two medical marijuana bills, but they’re already dead.) Some states are pushing full adult-use legalization. Others are pulling back on medical legalization measures adopted by voters last November. We’ll keep tracking them as they live and die. Most state legislatures adjourn by early June. Stay tuned.

Colorado marijuana leader says dismantling of industry would cause a recession

Despite new figures that show Colorado’s marijuana sales topped $1 billion for the first time ever last year, there is some concern in the state over what could happen to the burgeoning business under new U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Sessions is on record in the past saying that “Good people don’t smoke marijuana” and that “marijuana is not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized” and that it is “a very real danger.”

City attorney: There's no reason Denver couldn't allow marijuana vaping

There is no state or city law that would prevent cannabis consumers from vaping marijuana in places that receive a social consumption permit.

Smoking joints and blunts would still be barred within yoga studios, concert venues and other establishments due to the restrictions put in place by the Colorado Clean Indoors Air Act. But the act leaves a loophole for vaping marijuana inside permitted businesses and venues in Denver, said city attorney Marley Bordovsky.

Bordovsky specializes in Denver’s code enforcement rules and sits on the Social Consumption Advisory Committee. The committee met for the second time Wednesday to continue ironing out suggested rules and regulations related to Initiative 300.

Colorado Releases Comprehensive Guide for Marijuana Industry, Including Workplace Hazards Like Fires and Explosions

The Colorado Department of Health and Environment released a comprehensive guide for worker safety guide for the marijuana industry Tuesday.

The guide took about two years to complete and is likely the first of its kind compiled by a state agency, said Roberta Smith, Occupational Health Program Manager at CDHE.

Part of the purpose of the guide, Smith said, is to remind the industry that though the federal government has not sanctioned the legalization medical and recreational marijuana, businesses in the industry are still required to follow rules from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Weed 101: Colorado Agriculture Agency Shares Pot Know-How

Want to know how to grow weed safely? Soon you’ll be able to ask the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

The agency is moving past years of skepticism on regulating marijuana. Agriculture officials are telling other states what they’ve learned about regulating a plant that is illegal under federal law.

The department is also working on the world’s first government-produced guidelines on how to grow weed.

Pot’s commercial popularity has forced state agriculture officials to stop considering marijuana a running joke and start thinking of it as a commercial crop in need of regulation.

Colorado sold about a billion dollars’ worth of marijuana last year, making it a cash crop, the same as many others.
