City considers extending hours for marijuana sales

A request from at least one Glenwood Springs retail marijuana shop to extend the allowed business hours for recreational pot sales in the city beyond 7 p.m. has prompted City Council to consider doing just that.

Currently, business hours for both recreational and medical marijuana sales are limited to between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., seven days a week.

While the hours for medical sales are governed by state statute, municipalities have the flexibility to establish their own hours of operation until as late as midnight for recreational sales, which became legal in Colorado last year.

Initially, when the city wrote its regulations to allow establishments to sell both medical and retail recreational marijuana, the hours were kept the same.

Plants at six Denver grows on hold over pesticide use

The city of Denver has ordered a hold on some marijuana plants from six grow facilities after the discovery that pesticides may have been improperly used.

The Denver Fire Department noticed the violations during routine inspections and passed along concerns to the city’s Department of Environmental Health, according to city spokesman Dan Rowland.

“There (is) clear language on the labels to guide their usage, saying it’s not for indoor use, or that the product isn’t intended to be used on items grown for human consumption — like marijuana,” Rowland said.

Rowland said the hold affects only part of the grow effort at the six facilities, adding that those plants can still be maintained and harvested but can’t be marketed at this time.

IRS will refund fines to Denver pot shop that pays tax in cash

The Internal Revenue Service has backed away from a policy that penalized an unbanked marijuana business in Denver for paying taxes in cash, but the federal agency will not say if the approach applies industry-wide.

In a settlement with Denver-based Allgreens, a medical-marijuana dispensary that challenged the agency over its policy, the IRS said it would abate future penalties and will refund about $25,000 of fines the business was forced to pay despite having paid its federal employment withholding on time.

Colorado Marijuana Study Finds Legal Weed Contains Potent THC Levels

This is not your father's weed.

Colorado marijuana is nearly twice as potent as illegal pot of past decades, and some modern cannabis packs triple the punch of vintage ganja, lab tests reveal for the first time.

In old-school dope, levels of THC — the psychoactive chemical that makes people high — were typically well below 10 percent. But in Colorado's legal bud, the average THC level is 18.7 percent, and some retail pot contains 30 percent THC or more, according to research released Monday.

Smells Like Freedom: DC and Colorado microbreweries debut pot-aroma IPA

Beer geeks thrive off finding common ground with one another. And the folks behind Washington D.C.-based DC Brau and Colorado-rooted Oskar Blues share a lot more than their love of microbrews. Both breweries now hail from areas of the U.S. that are home to the most relaxed cannabis laws in the United States — and they’re debuting a protest beer today (yes, St. Patrick’s Day) in honor of their 420-friendliness.

The new beer, called Smells Like Freedom, will be tapped tonight at D.C. hangout Meridian Pint in the Columbia Heights neighborhood — “where Initiative 71 supporters gathered on Election Night last year to celebrate legalization,” according to The Washington Post.
