Colorado's marijuana money problem will be difficult to solve

Colorado has a serious pot money problem.

And it's not that it's being laundered.

The state is on track to have to refund the revenue it generates this fiscal year from two voter-approved retail marijuana taxes: the 10 percent sales tax and 15 percent excise tax were intended to pay for school building construction and the enforcement and regulation of the drug's new market.

COLORADO MARIJUANA TAXES

Ballot projections; FY2014-15 to January

15 percent excise tax: $27.5 million; $12.7 million

10 percent sales tax: $39.5 million; $24.9 million

State spending without new taxes: $12.08 billion

State revenue from the new excise and sales tax: $67 million; $37.6 million

Colorado pot taxes: Recreational sales for January 2015 strongest yet

Colorado pot businesses sold a record amount of marijuana in January, resulting in an excise tax of $2.3 million designated for public schools, state officials said Wednesday.

The numbers, reported by the Colorado Department of Revenue, show that January’s school-designated pot excise tax is more than 10 times the amount in January 2014, when the state first collected the tax on wholesale marijuana transfers.

From December to January, the school tax sum jumped about 21 percent, from $1.9 million to $2.3 million. In January 2014, the state collected $195,318 in taxes allotted for school construction capital.

In total, the amount of taxes, licenses and fees stemming from medical and recreational marijuana sales amounts to $8.8 million this January.

Brighton sets city rules for growing marijuana for personal use

Brighton residents who are growing marijuana in their homes need to ensure that their plants are at least two feet lower than the ceiling, according to one of the new indoor cultivation regulations adopted by City Council.

The state has regulations for home grows per Amendment 64, but Brighton officials localized those rules by imposing limits on grow room sizes, as well as additional safety requirements like not allowing the plants or storage material to reach the ceiling and risk fire hazards with grow lights.

Colorado pot sales soar to record in January, bringing $2.3 million for schools

Colorado pot businesses sold a record amount of marijuana in January, resulting in an excise tax of $2.3 million designated for public schools, state officials said Wednesday.

Based on the Colorado Department of Revenue data, around $36.4 million of recreational marijuana was sold this January compared to about $14.69 million sold the same month last year.
