Where Recreational Marijuana Is Legal, Should Those in Prison for Weed Crimes Get a Puff, Puff, Pass?

High Society: Pardons for nonviolent marijuana offenders in states where weed is legal are becoming part of the debate as more states consider legalizing cannabis.

Twenty years ago, Rico Garcia was 21 when he got caught up in a marijuana sting in Colorado with a friend who wanted to buy some weed. The seller turned out to be a police informant, and Garcia and his friend were arrested.

“The police came and arrested us and said we were selling weed,” says Garcia, now a 41-year-old marijuana advocate who runs Cannabis Alliance for Regulation and Education. “My friend said it was his, but … under Colorado law at the time, 8 ounces was possession with intent and I got a felony.”

Suspensions re-instated for Colorado doctors who recommended high medical marijuana plant counts

Four Colorado doctors accused of over-recommending high plant counts for medical marijuana patients have had their suspensions re-instated, after a judge reversed course and tossed out their lawsuit.

The decision means the doctors will go through with administrative hearings in the hopes of having their suspensions lifted. An attorney for the doctors says an appeal of the lawsuit’s dismissal is also likely.

But there is a 34,000-square foot warehouse filled with thousands of marijuana plants heavy with glistening buds the size of pine cones.

Where Does All That Colorado Pot Tax Go?

Colorado is pulling in a significant amount of money by taxing recreational marijuana, but it’s not enough to pave the streets in gold.

In part because supporters of legal pot hyped the potential to raise millions, some Coloradans have been left to wonder why all that money hasn’t revolutionized life in our state.

In the last couple of months, viewers have asked 9NEWS questions like:

“I understand the schools need refurbishing but isn't that what the taxes from the marijuana was supposed to go to?  Why isn't anyone responsible to account for all of that money?”

“When will taxes collected on the passing of the legalization of marijuana actually be distributed to the promised programs?”

Judge deals blow to Starbuds in bid to keep Denver marijuana grow license

A Denver District Court judge has dealt Starbuds a setback in its fight against the city’s first-ever denial of a routine cultivation license renewal.

In late June, the city’s top licensing official sided with neighbors in Elyria-Swansea who argued that the marijuana chain’s small recreational marijuana grow operation — located above its original dispensary at 4690 Brighton Blvd. — was a detriment to the working-class area’s quality of life and hindered its prospects for improvement.
