Surplus Marijuana Tax Revenues to be Used for Bully Prevention in Colorado

Surplus marijuana tax revenue could soon benefit your kids, as the state is set to distribute millions to schools in the next few months.

The money comes from Proposition BB, passed by voters last November, which allows the state to keep surplus marijuana tax revenues.

The surplus funds currently amount to about $66 million.

One of the programs benefiting from the surplus funds will be a new bully prevention grant from the Colorado Department of Education.

Just this week, a video of a middle school bully at a bus stop in Commerce City went viral and sparked outrage among community members.

"I think it's a huge problem,” said East High senior Isabel Dias-Bertch. “It's something that haunts you the rest of your life."

Why Marijuana Advocates Are Criticizing Chelsea Clinton

Chelsea Clinton made a pretty bold assertion about the health risks of marijuana during a campaign event in Ohio on Saturday. The daughter of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton implied that multiple deaths in Colorado, where the substance is legal for medical and recreational purposes, could be attributed to pot.

Marijuana Grow Ops Could Soon Rival Data Center Energy Use

Forget about electric vehicles; pot is driving new energy peaks in the states where it is legal.

Data centers may be more ubiquitous than indoor grow operations for marijuana, but the latter are as energy-intensive as the former, according to a new report by EQ Research.

Indoor grows can have an energy intensity of about 2,000 watts per meter, according to the report, A Chronic Problem. A 2012 study from Berkeley Lab found that indoor marijuana production could account for as much as 1 percent of U.S. electricity use, about half the energy consumed by data centers.

Colorado Marijuana Products Must Come With Warning Labels Starting Oct. 1

Beginning Oct. 1, all new medical and retail marijuana packaging must feature the new universal symbol on the front.

Colorado marijuana products will soon have labels aimed to keep the drug out of the hands of children.

Starting Saturday, the weed products must feature a diamond-shaped symbol with this statement on the packaging: "Contains Marijuana. Keep out of the reach of children."

According to a news release Monday, the state's Department of Public Health and Environment and Department of Revenue's Marijuana Enforcement Division have teamed up "to educate Coloradans about the rules, designed to promote public health and safety, raise awareness and help people more accurately identify marijuana products."

Don't legalize marijuana in Arizona, urged Colorado mayor

A Colorado mayor and law officer urged Arizona voters to oppose Proposition 205, citing making marijuana legal would threaten Arizonans’ safety.

More children are using drugs in Colorado since recreational marijuana was legalized four years before, Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers said at a news conference.

The mayor said that, “The problem with the leap to legalization is the message it sends to young people in terms of their perception of risk. That’s what’s caused the dramatic increase in youth use in Colorado.”

The Arizona’s Proposition 205 has been criticized by Suthers, police Sgt. Jim Gerhardt, two Arizona law-enforcement leaders and Thornton. The bill will allow the recreational use of marijuana within certain limits.

For the First Time Ever, Cannabis Oil Will Be Used in a Hospital

In December, Nicole and Ernie Nunez brought their beautiful baby girl, Amylea, into the world. However, when they brought her home, things quickly took a turn for the worst.

“About a day after we went home from delivery is when she had her first seizure,” Nicole said. “She has a rare form of epilepsy. They don’t know exactly the type.”

For the past two months, the Nunez family has been desperately trying to treat their daughter’s condition. Doctors in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the family is from, were unable to find a cause and unable to treat young Amylea. So, the family has fled to Colorado.

Nicole stays at the hospital in Aurora while Ernie drives back and forth to take care of the couple’s other children and to work.

Colorado medical pot law poised to add PTSD as qualifier

Marijuana pioneer Colorado is poised to add post-traumatic stress disorder to its medical marijuana program, joining 18 other states that consider PTSD a condition treatable by pot.

A panel of state lawmakers voted 5-0 Wednesday to endorse the addition of PTSD to Colorado’s 2000 medical pot law. The vote doesn’t have legal effect; it’s just a recommendation to the full Legislature, which resumes work in January. But the vote indicates a dramatic shift for a state that has allowed medical pot for more than a decade but hasn’t endorsed its use for PTSD.
