A 'Budtender' Gives Us a Potent Look Inside a Weed Dispensary

In this week's edition of First-Person Shooter, we gave two cameras to Emily, a Denver-based "budtender" who runs the counter at Magnolia Road, a dispensary that operates both a medical and recreational marijuana storefront, as well as a grow house. A huge weed enthusiast, she smokes about an eighth of dank nug a day, and helps upwards of 300 customers pick out a variety of strains, edibles, and other pot products.

Cannabis Prices More Volatile Than Other Ag Commodities

Having assessed wholesale cannabis prices for a year, we thought it would be insightful to compare the price movement of cannabis to other agricultural commodities.  The chart below illustrates the average week-on-week price change for selected commodities over the past year.

Legal marijuana pushes Colorado broker to new heights

Legalization for marijuana may be on the horizon in Canada, but it’s hazy as to how the new legislation will be implemented – and what the resulting impact on the insurance industry will be.

However, Canadian insurers do have a precedent to look to in Colorado, which legalized the drug in 2013. Local insurance professional Julius Birch “J.B.” Woods, owner of Parker, Colo.-based Greenpoint Insurance – one of the only cannabis-focused independent insurance agencies in the country – says he can barely keep up with demand. He can already report a premium volume of 140% over last year.

Is pot tax money for Denver schools a myth? DPS video leaves out key fact

An animated video from Denver Public Schools hopes to remind voters that the district is not as flush with cash from marijuana tax money as some might think.

In the two school years since the state legalized marijuana, the district says it has seen zero of the state tax money earmarked for schools. Says the state: Hey, the district didn’t ask.

The B&B where cannabis is part of your stay

Colorado's cannabis industry is growing fast, with armoured cars full of cash a common sight on Denver's streets. But businesses are stuck in a legal no-man's land - state laws allow the drug to be sold, but federal laws still prohibit it.

I am in a bed and breakfast, and it's Friday evening, Happy Hour. Drinks and nibbles are flowing freely, but there's something else - a sweet, sickly smell in the air. Yes I'm in Denver, the Mile High City, 1,600m in altitude, in Colorado, the first American state to legalise the consumption and sale of cannabis for recreational use, in 2014.

A Brief Visit to Colorado's Brave New Cannabis World

Is The Farm, with its earnest salespeople and eager shoppers, a vision of pot's future here?

Just 10 minutes before its 9 a.m. opening time, a dozen mellow shoppers have already lined up outside The Farm Saturday in Boulder, Colorado.

Curious, I join the line and ask about the commercial commotion.

A middle-class dude replied that The Farm was offering a 20-per-cent discount on cannabis products in honour of the late Prince that morning.

It was a "Purple Haze" sale, he said.

Others in line volunteered that the state's new marijuana stores were "awesome" and the marijuana trade thriving.

Marijuana Companies Join Forces to Expand Beyond State Lines

Normally, when a company based in one state wants to sell products in another state, it starts calling truckers. For Strainz, a Las Vegas marijuana company, it was more complicated.

By early 2015, Strainz’s owners knew they wanted to expand to Colorado and Washington, the states with the most normalized marijuana markets. Despite state laws that allow the sale of marijuana, it remains a federal criminal offense to ship it across state lines. And as Nevada residents, the husband-and-wife co-founders weren’t eligible to apply for business licenses in either state.

DEA approves PTSD marijuana study

The Drug Enforcement Agency has given its blessing to a study on the effect of medical marijuana on post-traumatic stress disorder, the first randomized, controlled research in the U.S. for PTSD that will use the actual plant instead of oils or synthesized cannabis.

According to the research's nonprofit sponsor, Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS, the DEA's approval gives researchers the go-ahead to buy the marijuana for the study from the National Institute of Drug Abuse.

Once the marijuana has been secured, the group will begin recruiting and enrolling participants, perhaps as early as June, MAPS spokesman Brad Burge said.

What The World Can Learn From Colorado's Marijuana Experience

When the Canadian Parliament considered decriminalizing marijuana possession in 2003, U.S. officials loudly objected. They complained that the proposed reform would betray the anti-drug cause, worried that it would encourage drug tourism and facilitate marijuana smuggling, and threatened to respond with a border crackdown that would impede trade and travel between the two countries.

Canadian legislators got the message. The marijuana bill, which would have made possessing up to 15 grams (about half an ounce) of marijuana a civil offense punishable by a fine and reduced the penalties for home cultivation of up to seven plants, never got a vote.
