4 Governors Ask Trump Admin to Chill out on Marijuana Enforcement

Governors in four states that have legalized marijuana in some form have written a letter to two Trump administration officials requesting they consult with states before making any changes to regulatory and enforcement systems for the drug.

The independent governor of Alaska joined the Democratic governors of Colorado, Oregon and Washington to write a letter to US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Monday, asking them to continue the Obama administration’s hands-off policy towards enforcing federal marijuana laws in states that have okayed medicinal or recreational use.

The Problem with America's Marijuana DUI Laws: Science

Everyone can agree that driving while stoned is dangerous, but how do states remedy the flawed science behind marijuana drug tests?

Gagan Singh rolled a “fat blunt” before he hit the slopes at Lake Tahoe on a sunny Wednesday morning.

By the end of the day, he needed a refill, so he drove to Reno and stopped at one of the local medical marijuana dispensaries. With his Patagonia jacket and bleached-blond man-bun, Singh was eager to head to his hotel and smoke.

The only reason he wouldn't be smoking while driving to the hotel was because he believes Nevada cops are stricter than the ones in the Bay Area.

Cashing in on Cannabis: How New Freedoms Began a Green Gold Rush in the United States

Like many states, Illinois is in deep financial trouble. Looking at the latest audit,  its black hole has deepened to $9.6bn (£7.6bn) and, according to the state’s financial comptroller, the books are “abysmal”.

But there could be salvation at hand if it becomes the first state in the midwest to legalise and tax the recreational use of marijuana. Two Democrats in the state legislature have introduced a bill to change the law, arguing this could raise as much as $700m a year.

Should the bill go through, it would bring the number of states where recreational pot is legal up to nine. If you throw in Washington DC, then more than 80m Americans would be free to enjoy cannabis.

Good, Bad and Bug-ly: Keeping Cannabis Safe

Organic has become a buzzword, and for many it has become synonymous with safe. In recent years, pesticides used on crops that will be consumed by humans have become a growing concern.

The attitudes towards potentially harmful chemicals puts cannabis into an interesting category when it comes to “organic” growing and pesticide use. While some cannabis is consumed by ingesting, a lot of it is combusted and inhaled in some form. This puts otherwise safe or organic pesticides to a whole different test.

Many products that were once used regularly are being banned as more research is done on cannabis-specific use. Pesticides normally used on crops are not burned and inhaled by a consumer, but when they are used on cannabis can quickly become dangerous.

Cannabis Provides a Pot of Gold for University Scholarships

Colorado’s excise tax set to raise millions of dollars to support college access.

Two US communities are giving new meaning to the term “higher education”.

Pueblo and Adams counties in Colorado – one of the growing number of states that have legalised the sale of recreational marijuana – are putting proceeds from taxes on weed into what appear to be the world’s first cannabis-supported university scholarships.

After all, said Sal Pace, the commissioner of Pueblo County, other scholarships in the US are already underwritten by taxes on alcohol sales and proceeds from long-odds government-sanctioned lotteries.

Unlike with a lottery ticket, Pace said, “At least with cannabis, you get what you pay for.”

Marijuana Equipment Start-Ups Flourish as Large Rivals Avoid Legal Pitfalls

Marijuana’s uncertain legal status across the country has unleashed a network of innovators and entrepreneurs into a space that would ordinarily be filled with name-brand manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies and federally funded research universities.

These small “cannabusinesses” are rushing to fill niches and make money in a field where the drug's illegal status at the federal level has made many start-up basics — from getting a new machine to accessing credit — far more challenging. Colorado, for instance, boasts a cottage industry of innovation because it was one of the first states to legalize recreational cannabis sales to adults, and also has a highly educated, youthful workforce.

Colorado Crafts Bold Plan To Counter Possible Crackdown On Recreational Cannabis

Colorado is considering an unusual strategy to protect its nascent marijuana industry from a potential federal crackdown, even at the expense of hundreds of millions of dollars in tax collections.

A bill pending in the Legislature would allow cannabis growers and retailers to reclassify their recreational marijuana as medical marijuana if a change in federal law or enforcement occurs.

It’s the boldest attempt yet by a U.S. marijuana state to avoid federal intervention in its cannabis market.
