Questioning Cannabis: Home Truths and Harm Reduction

As UNGASS draws to a close over in New York City, The Guardian have published a bold editorial on cannabis use and psychosis.

Drugs policy in the UK is not actually made in smoke-filled rooms but it might as well be. The mixture of befuddled optimism with a lack of urgency that characterises official thinking about cannabis has had dangerous results.

Bulgaria: Protesters in Sofia Demand Legalisation of Cannabis]

The participants in a procession held in the centre of the Bulgarian capital on Sunday demanded the legalisation of cannabis.

Among the main demands of the protesters are: allowing the medical use of cannabis, decriminalising the possession and cultivation of cannabis for personal use, allowing and regulating the growth and procession of all products from industrial cannabis.

Organisers remind that this is one of the fastest developing industries in the world, in which Bulgaria used to be a regional leader some hundred years ago.

Protesters are in favour of allowing patients to undergo treatment with medical cannabis.

Decriminalizing Cannabis Would Hurt Islamic State, Mafia- Italy Prosecutor

Decriminalizing cannabis sales would strike a blow against Islamic State militants and Italian mobsters who, according to ongoing investigations, are smuggling hashish together, Italy's top prosecutor told Reuters.

The main smuggling route for North African hash - compressed cannabis resin - now runs from Casablanca, Morocco, through Algeria, Tunisia to Tobruk in eastern Libya, said national anti-mafia and anti-terrorism chief Franco Roberti.

Along that route is the seaside city of Sirte, which now serves as a Mediterranean base for the most powerful Islamic State (IS) branch outside Syria and Iraq.

French Government Dismisses Official's Call for Pot Decriminalization Debate

"The prohibition of cannabis in France deserves to be discussed," Jean-Marie Le Guen, France's secretary of state for relations with the parliament, told the news outlet BFMTV on Monday. "Prohibition does not lead to a reduction in consumption. Our country is one of those whose youth consumes the most."

While the government continues slowly considering progress, some are taking Italy’s cannabis future into their own hands.

Anyone who has ever spent time in Italy knows that the country has some of the most draconian drug laws in the western world. When I studied abroad in Florence, for example, it took nearly a month to find anything to smoke.

Scientists in Italy have now traced marijuana’s ability to treat male fertility.

Smoking pot frequently is known to take its toll on male sperm, but the new study from the University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy affirms marijuana has the potential to treat infertility in men.
