Florida marijuana proponents are moving forward with a new campaign to legalize pot after a recent push to bring medical cannabis to the state failed to pass muster with voters and state lawmakers. Replican State Rep. Greg Steube of Sarasota refiled a bill Friday to allow the medical use of marijuana. Meanwhile, supporters of a proposed ballot measure that would overhaul the state's constitution and allow legal cannabis have begun a signature collection drive.

Florida lawmakers passed the so-called Charlotte's Web medical marijuana law two years ago -- but to date nobody has been helped.

That may change under a bill filed for the 2016 legislative session that would remove the limit on the number of growers and expand the number of diseases that qualify for use to include HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease, Crohn's disease, Parkinson's disease, or any terminal illness. Only cancer patients and seizure sufferers qualify now.

The current law has been bogged down in red tape from the Department of Health as well as litigation from nursery owners trying to position themselves as one of only five cannabis growers in the state.

Marco Rubio says as president he would enforce federal law against states that have legalized marijuana.

Out of the nearly 100 plant nurseries eligible to produce “Charlotte’s Web,” a low-THC, non-euphoric medical strain of marijuana, 24 are competing for one of only five available growing licenses.

According to Mara Burger, press secretary of the Florida Department of Health, 28 applications in total were received during the three-week open enrollment period. Several of the nurseries applied for licenses in more than one of the five designated regions (Northwest, Northeast, Central, Southwest, and Southeast).
