28 Florida businesses apply with state to grow low-potency marijuana

More than two dozen agricultural businesses have submitted applications to the Florida Department of Health in hopes of getting a license to grow low-THC marijuana for medicinal use.

Over one-fifth of those applications are for businesses who want to grow the strain in Northeast Florida.

The Department of Health closed the window for applications Wednesday and 28 businesses submitted requests to get the licenses. Only five licenses to cultivate the drug will be issued, one for each of five geographic regions in the state.

Six applications came from Northeast Florida businesses. Those Northeast Florida agricultural businesses include:

Miami Beach unanimously passes marijuana ordinance

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -

Miami Beach commissioners unanimously passed a marijuana ordinance Wednesday to fine those caught with small amounts of marijuana instead of sending them to jail.

The move comes a week after Miami-Dade commissioners passed a similar ordinance.

Under the new law, police will have the option of issuing a $100 fine to those caught with less than 20 grams of marijuana. The difference between the Miami-Dade County ordinance is that the fines collected in Miami Beach will go to the city and not the county.

By Bob Frucci

Tremendous growth brings Greater Challenges

These are interesting and exciting times for both the Medical Marijuana (MMJ) and Security Industries. The MMJ industry is growing tremendously with all indications that this growth will continue into the long term. There are tremendous amounts of cash and huge assets of highly targeted valuable product that require protection. With tremendous growth comes tremendous challenge.

The legal marijuana industry brought in $2.4 billion last year, so it's certainly no longer any sort of laughing matter.

Drug interdictions result in a loss of about $8 billion in revenue for drug traffickers

On June 12, crew members of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Vigilant offloaded 3,100 pounds of marijuana seized from a go-fast boat intercepted in the Caribbean Sea.

The story on how Coast Guard personnel seized the marijuana in late May in waters between Panama and the Colombian island of San Andrés emerged last week in Miami federal court records.

According to a criminal complaint filed by a special agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the action unfolded May 27 when a go-fast vessel was spotted traveling in international waters about 100 miles south of San Andrés Island, a Colombian possession east of Nicaragua and north of Panama.

Florida Still Playing Medical Marijuana Waiting Game

Even though it has been nearly a year since the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act was signed into law by Florida Gov. Rick Scott, the process to make available “Charlotte’s Web,” a non-euphoric strain of marijuana, is still a little ways off.

Extract from the plant can be used to treat patients suffering from epileptic seizures and other related disorders.
