The low-THC, non-euphoric medical cannabis oil, also known as Charlotte's Web, is one step closer to reality in Florida.  

A judge has dismissed a challenge that a law approved last year by the Florida Legislature, the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act of 2014, would favor some potential marijuana growers over others.  The challenge was brought by Baywood Nurseries of Apopka.

Under state law, five licenses would be issued to companies to grow the marijuana and extract its oil, to be prescribed to those who suffer from debilitating conditions, such as epilepsy.   While the law went into effect last summer, the Florida Department of Health has not been able to proceed with rules and regulations on how to implement Charlotte's Web, because of the legal wrangling.

The University of Florida is moving forward with two state-funded research initiatives on low-THC medical marijuana systems lawmakers approved in 2014.

This week, the Florida Department of Health announced its approval of $1 million for a team led by UF Health Shands pediatric neurologist Dr. Paul Carney to treat up to 50 children who have drug resistant epilepsy with a minimal-THC content, cannabidiol-rich oral solution called Epidiolex.

That study will recruit participants in Gainesville and across the state at several other hospitals and focus on children ages 2-16 whose seizures have not been controlled by other anti-epileptic drugs.

Even after the drive to get medical marijuana legalized in Florida fell short by two percentage points in voting, there still remains a strong backing by many Floridians for medicinal weed to be made legal. But while groups like United for Care are pushing to get medical marijuana back on the ballot in 2016, it's still very much illegal to possess it, grow it, and sell it — even while some still think there are exceptions. 

Yet that's not stopping medical marijuana advocates and experts from hitting up Palm Beach County this week to discuss medicinal cannabis and its many benefits.

A Lakeland company behind Colorado’s tracking system for marijuana plants has accused a competitor of deceptive business practices.

Lawyers for Franwell say BioTrackTHC, based in Ft. Lauderdale, lies in publicity material and lies about Franwell in the media and communications to state regulators.

The purpose, according to documents filed by Franwell in federal court May 11, is to interfere with the Lakeland company’s $1.5 million Colorado contract and to sway officials to choose BioTrack for a competitive contract in Jamaica.

A Florida advocate of legalizing marijuana says a threat prompted him to withdraw his offer to pay supporters of Mississippi's petition drive to gather signatures on petitions for a statewide election.

Jeremy Bufford of Medical Marijuana United in Tampa, Florida, offered in April to pay $1 to $2 for each certified signature.

The Commercial Appeal reports that Bufford says in an email to Mississippi supporters that he decided to withdraw after consulting with law enforcement and attorneys. He did not describe the threat.

He did not immediately respond to an email Sunday from The Associated Press; the newspaper said he did not return its phone call.
