Edmonton marijuana grower given nine years for killing co-conspirator

A second man has been sent to prison after killing his co-conspirator in a marijuana operation for spending the drug home’s rent money on a Mexican vacation.

Stanley Vincent James Shawyer, 38, was sentenced to nine years for manslaughter after the May 2012 killing of Phillip Jochen Woehrle. In December, 38-year-old Thaven Philipp Gardiner received the same sentence for the same crime.

Woehrle, 28, was killed by a single gunshot. His body was later discovered in the burning drug home at 129th Street and 117th Avenue.

“Mr. Woehrle died in a cruel and frightening way,” said Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Adam Germain. “He was shot in the back with a .40-calibre handgun. He is more than just a name on the indictment.”

Hemp firms fire up $42-M merger

Leader in food products joins leader in ingredients

Manitoba has long been home to the two largest hemp food companies on the continent and now they have joined forces to make an even stronger push to get hemp foods into more North American households.

Winnipeg's Manitoba Harvest, a subsidiary of Compass Diversified Holdings, has acquired Hemp Oil Canada, Inc. (HOC) for $42 million.

Last summer, Connecticut-based Compass acquired 87 per cent of Manitoba Harvest for $132.5 million.

Both companies are dominant leaders in their respective markets -- Manitoba Harvest in branded hemp foods and HOC in the hemp-ingredient field. Each of them command about 65 per cent of the North American market.

Manitoba Liquor Board planning for pot sales underway

The impending legalization of cannabis has sparked a formal effort in Manitoba to determine how marijuana ought to be regulated and sold.

In Monday’s throne speech, the Selinger government said Manitoba’s Liquor & Gaming Authority and Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries "will be well positioned to regulate the sale and distribution of marijuana in a safe and socially responsible manner" once Justin Trudeau’s Liberals make it legal to light up.

On Dec. 3, when the Trudeau government issues its own throne speech, Canada’s provinces and territories expect to receive direction to help them plan for the not-so-distant future when consumers can buy a bag of weed on the up and up.

Manitoba premier says government liquor stores best place to sell marijuana

Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger says government liquor stores are the best place to sell marijuana if and when the federal government legalizes the drug.

Selinger says Manitoba Liquor Mart outlets have staff that are well-trained on the potential risks of alcohol, and he suggests they would be in the same position to provide advice about marijuana.

He says there would be no requirement for workers to consume the drug.

Selinger adds there would probably be some private involvement too.

Liquor is sold in private outlets in some rural Manitoba areas where there is no government store, and Selinger says he expects that model could be used for marijuana as well.

Winnipeg medical marijuana owner reopens shop but won't be selling pot

A week after being raided by police, the owner of Your Medical Cannabis Headquarters has re-opened his doors.

Police raided Glenn Price's medical cannabis dispensary last week and charged him with several drug related offences.

Price, 54, says he re-opened his store Tuesday to continue to educate people about medical marijuana.

Price says he won't be selling marijuana, but people can smoke in the building, which he says isn't against his bail conditions.

He says as long as he's isn't smoking it and doesn't have it on his person, he's fine.

Price is scheduled to appear in court on August 20th.
