The biggest drug dealer on Silk Road has been sentenced to 10 years in prison

Cornelis Jan Slomp, the Dutchman who became the biggest seller of illegal drugs on the so-called Deep Web marketplace Silk Road, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Slomp sold MDMA, ecstasy, cocaine, benzodiazepine, amphetamine, LSD, and marijuana in vast quantities on Silk Road, working from his home in Holland and using the account name SuperTrips.

What made Slomp such a big target wasn't the range of drugs he sold (lots of sellers offer a variety of items on the Deep Web, a section of the internet hidden from most web browsers), but the sheer amount he was able to sell.

Idea For San Jose Company's Marijuana-Infused Coffee Prompted By Trip To Amsterdam

Marijuana enthusiasts can now drink their bud with breakfast, thanks to a San Jose company.

Jill Amen runs House Of Jane, a premium marijuana-coffee and tea company out of San Jose. She started testing out her ideas in the kitchen after a trip to Amsterdam.

“You will taste a gourmet cup of coffee or tea, organic, fair-trade and locally roasted,” Amen said.

Since launching the product five months ago, the K-cup servings are in high demand.

Workers at the company’s processing centers package up to 1,400 K-cups, and 700 bags of marijuana-infused teas per day.

Science Seeks to Unlock Marijuana’s Secrets

As the once-vilified drug becomes more accepted, researchers around the world are trying to understand how it works and how it might fight disease.

There’s nothing new about cannabis, of course. It’s been around humankind pretty much forever.

In Siberia charred seeds have been found inside burial mounds dating back to 3000 B.C. The Chinese were using cannabis as a medicine thousands of years ago. Marijuana is deeply American too—as American as George Washington, who grew hemp at Mount Vernon. For most of the country’s history, cannabis was legal, commonly found in tinctures and extracts.

Dutch police destroyed 6,006 marijuana plantations in 2014

Dutch police discovered and dismantled 6,006 marijuana plantations in 2014, slightly up on 2013’s total, website Nu.nl reports on Monday. In total, police seized over 1.6 million plants and nearly 230,000 seedlings plus 2,000 kilos of prepared marijuana – highlighting the scale of domestic production. The biggest rise in seizures was in the Zeeland-West Brabant police district, where the number of plantations was up 27%. There was also an 18% rise in Rotterdam. This year the government is making a major effort to stamp out production and has made it a criminal offence for companies to supply people with lamps, fertilizer and other equipment if they suspect it is being used to grow marijuana. All but around 300 of the plantations were indoors.

Marijuana's magic bean men

The outlaw botanists who designed the marijuana Americans smoke and the money they didn't make doing it

Since almost everyone interviewed for this story is, or has been, a criminal, almost everyone long ago adopted pseudonyms. Some are no longer criminals, so don’t mind their real names being used. Some are no longer criminals, but still prefer to use their pseudonyms.
