New York Holds Summit On Synthetic Marijuana, Also Known As K2

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — New York is holding its first-ever summit on synthetic marijuana.

Law enforcement officials, state and city lawmakers and health experts are taking part in the summit, which is being moderated by State Sen. Jeff Klein at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.

A mother, whose son died after using K2, will testify at the summit.

In April, synthetic marijuana, also know as K2, was found to be responsible for 150 emergency room visits across New York City in just a one-week period, according to the health department.

The summit aims to find coordinated solutions to end the K2 epidemic.

The Medical Marijuana Dilemma

High out-of-pocket costs may prove to be an insurmountable obstacle for patients seeking medical marijuana. While the treatment has been legalized, the state has not set a price for it, and insurance companies will not be covering it.

As a result, people like Angel won't have access.

"My story is a long story."

Actually, Angel's not his real name, but we're using it for reasons that will become clear in a minute. Angel's been in Rochester for thirty years, before that, Puerto Rico. In 2006, Angel found out he was HIV positive. But, that isn't the only health problem he struggles with.

"I have chronic back pain, I have arthritis, osteoarthritis, sickle cell, other than my HIV. So, all those together, every disease brings a little bit of pain."

Homing In on the Source of Runner’s High

We’ve probably all heard someone exclaim, “Ah, my endorphins are kicking in!” at the end of a good run. Endorphins are famous for supposedly producing “runner’s high,” that fleeting sense of calm and euphoria that engulfs many of us after a satisfying workout.

But in fact, endorphins may be unfairly hogging the credit for making workouts enjoyable, according to an enlightening new experiment with animals. The findings suggest that endorphins have little to do with runner’s high. Instead, that euphoric feeling may be the product of a completely different but oddly familiar substance — the body’s own endocannabinoids, the chemicals that, like the cannabinoids in marijuana, lighten mood.

New York State Moves Closer To Growing Industrial Hemp

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT) -

New York State stands ready to start growing industrial hemp as part of a research program next year.

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo says the State Agriculture Department has released regulations for the pilot program that will allow universities in the state to apply for 10 licenses to grow and study hemp.

The research crop is related to marijuana, but lacks any significant amount of THC, the psychoactive chemical that makes marijuana a recreational drug.

Instead, industrial hemp is used to make paper, clothing, rope, oils, food products as well as the cannabinoids that are used in medical marijuana.

NY City Council Unanimously Votes to Approve K2 Synthetic Weed Ban

A set of three bills were unanimously passed this week to ban and impose stricter penalties on the sale of synthetic cannabis, commonly known as K2.

The three new bills are meant to combat the epidemic, and were passed by a 44-0 vote in a council meeting. One bill bans the sale of the synthetic drug, as well as criminalizes it. The second ensures anyone caught selling K2 will have their cigarette dealer license suspended. The third bill is meant to complement police crackdown on the chemical weed by allowing NYPD to use public nuisance regulations to put the pressure on any place making or selling the drug.
