2 million synthetic marijuana packets seized in Bronx bust

NEW YORK — Police have seized approximately 2 million packets of synthetic marijuana with a combined street value of $10 million from a Bronx garage.

Authorities made the discovery around 5 p.m. Wednesday in a two-bay garage.

Police say the drugs, commonly referred to as K2 or spice, were found pre-packaged for sale in laundry bags.

WCBS-TV reports the raid was a continuation of a bust last week that led to the indictment of 10 manufacturers and distributors from across New York's five boroughs.

The use or sale of K2 isn't a crime in New York City, and manufacturing the drug is classified as a health-code violation.

Teacher in Viral ‘Humans of New York’ Photo Attacks Marijuana, Says It Makes His Students ‘Less Curious’

Brandon Stanton, the 31-year-old photographer behind the viral Humans of New York photo series, does not shy away from sensitive topics.

On Monday, a photograph posted to the blog’s Instagram account was no different, touching on recreational marijuana use amongst high schoolers.

“I hate pot. I hate it even more than hard drugs,” reads the caption beneath a photo of a male teacher sitting on a bench, dressed in a red shirt, plaid shorts, and tennis shoes. The quote is an excerpt from a brief interview Stanton conducted with the man.

The caption continues: “I’ve taught high school for 25 years and I hate what marijuana does to my students.”

US senator addresses cannabis industry at New York summit

NEW YORK -- U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand told a group of marijuana industry professionals Monday that the federal government should reform laws affecting its medical use, allowing states to set their own policies.

The New York Democrat told members of the National Cannabis Industry Association that she's pushing for reforms she introduced last March with Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey.

Marijuana use is illegal under federal law but allowed in some cases in dozens of states. Gillibrand said more families would benefit from medical marijuana if they didn't have to fear federal prosecution.

New York’s Financial Elite Break Bad News To Marijuana Businesses

The budding marijuana industry is coming up against some major challenges from the titans of Wall Street, with several major banks saying they will steer clear of providing services to medical cannabis firms.

New York’s financial elite did not cite any policy or moral objections to cannabis. Instead, they explained that the law remains too opaque for them to take the risk of servicing marijuana businesses.

New York has so far licensed five businesses to sell and dispense medical marijuana. Five of the financial industry’s biggest names told Politico New York the services they would refuse to offer included handling deposits. They would also refuse to allow bank issued debit cards to buy marijuana.

The Growing Economy: Will Medical Marijuana in New York Lead to Drug Policy Changes?

By law, New York’s medical marijuana program is due to be up and running for patient prescriptions by early 2016, but what’s the future of the program after that? Will enough patients sign up? Will doctors be willing to issue prescriptions?

For now, state leaders say it’s unclear how many people they expect to qualify for the program.

"I think as we roll out the program, we’re going to get more information so, right now, I anticipate there will be patients who want this therapy and we’ll have more information in the months to come," said Health Commissioner Howard Zucker.

Salmon that will get you baked: weed-infused fish the latest in cannabis cuisine

Sliced thin with flecks of dill peeking out, the salmon looks like any other of gravlax you would have for brunch. But put it on a bagel with a schmear of cream cheese, and you will get pretty stoned eating this delicacy.

The mastermind behind the THC-infused salmon – cured in salt, dill, lemon, sugar and a weed tincture – is Josh Pollack, owner of Rosenberg’s Bagels and Delicatessen in Denver.

“I love bagels and lox, and I love cannabis,” Pollack said.
