New York medical marijuana distributors have yet to make a profit eight months after medical pot went legal in the Empire State, the Albany Times Union reported Sunday. There are simply too few patients in New York because of a lengthy qualification process that makes it hard for residents to purchase legal pot.

Researchers from New York University’s Centre for Drug Use and HIV Research looked at adults who engaged in sex while either drunk on alcohol or high on marijuana.

Based on the information given to them by the participants, they found that, overall, drunk sex is riskier and worse for you than sex while high.

Over 30 people were hospitalized yesterday in New York City, the latest event in an epidemic that's been affecting the country's poorer populations since 2008. Synthetic marijuana, also known as K2 or Spice, was long available over the counter in corner stores and head shops, an unregulated, unpredictable chemical substance that physically resembles marijuana.

More than 30 people had to be taken to hospital in New York after a mass-overdose of synthetic marijuana, police have said.

They collapsed or were barely able to walk in the same neighbourhood of Brooklyn after smoking K2.

Witnesses reported seeing victims lying on the pavement, shaking and leaning against trees and fire hydrants.

In total 33 people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. It was not immediately clear what drugs the victims had ingested, but police said some of the victims had been smoking K2, also known as synthetic marijuana.

Dennis Gonzalez, of Bushwick, told WNBC-TV that K2 use in that part of Brooklyn was out of control.

For years now, the city has said it will dial back arrests and prosecution of low-level marijuana cases: in 2014, Mayor de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bratton said the city would start handing out more tickets and summonses in place of arrests, and the Brooklyn District Attorney's office said it would no longer prosecute most cases in which people were caught with amounts of marijuana under 25 grams.
