Petition for pot: Efforts to legalize medical marijuana in Oklahoma move forward

OKLAHOMA CITY — Supporters of an effort to legalize medical marijuana hope to begin gathering signatures in early September.

Last week, members of Green the Vote filed paperwork with the Oklahoma Secretary of State’s office indicating their intent.

Following a protest period and a review of the ballot title, they hope to hit the streets, Isaac Caviness, president of Green the Vote, said Thursday. He said the organization is not anticipating a challenge to the petition.

Supporters expect to be gathering signatures by the first or second week of September, he said.

Oklahoma Group Fights for Legal Marijuana

The issue gets people talking. But no matter which side of the medical marijuana debate you fall on, its acceptance is growing.

"Twenty three states have medical marijuana legalized right now," said Isaac Caviness with Green the Vote Oklahoma.

Caviness would like to make Oklahoma number 24.

"There's real proof out there that it's curing cancer," said Caviness. "It's controlling epilepsy and seizures. It's helping with Parkinson's."

Caviness and his group submitted a petition request Friday at the state capitol. A petition to legalize the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. If approved, they'll have 90 days to collect 124,000 signatures.

"Across the state, we have several hundred volunteers," said Caviness.

Medical marijuana rules vary widely state to state

After waiting in line for hours at a booth during a medical marijuana convention in San Francisco, Jeff Harrington needed only a two-minute consultation and a written recommendation to become a medical marijuana patient in California. He now can legally purchase and possess marijuana from any one of thousands of marijuana businesses in the state.

Across the country in Connecticut, an established physician-patient relationship is required before patients are deemed qualified for medical marijuana, and only licensed pharmacists can own and operate dispensaries.

Oklahomans Rally For Medical Marijuana Initiative

OKLAHOMA CITY -

Oklahomans pushing for a stronger medical marijuana initiative rallied at the State Capitol on Saturday.

Organizers said although they made some strides in the past year, it's still not enough for patients who they said really need help.

All smiles now, little Jaqie Warrior looks like any happy two-year-old. But it hasn't always been this way.

“She can hold her head up she can hold things now she had lost all of her development, my baby was on the brink of death every day,” said Brittany Hardy Warrior.

Suffering from severe epilepsy, Jaqie's mother tried every medication.

"Injections, diets, everything, nothing worked for my daughter, she was having over 200 seizures a day."

Oklahoma Group wants medical marijuana measure added to the ballot

If at first you don't succeed, try and get medical marijuana legislation on the ballot a second time.

The group Oklahomans for Health is trying to make that happen.

FOX25 News reports the group will be launching a petition to allow the use of medical marijuana in our state.  This would be for people with documented proof they need the drug.

A similar petition failed, last year.

FOX25 News reports the group would need to get around 130,000 signatures in order to get the measure on the ballot.  The signatures need to come from registered voters.

Oklahoma for Health will start gathering signatures in August.  The group will have until October to get the necessary signatures.
