Cannabis Culture chain slams Justin Trudeau as prince and princess of pot busted, Ottawa shop raided

Police struck at the heart of a large Canadian chain of illegal marijuana shops Thursday, raiding Cannabis Culture locations in Ottawa and three other cities.

And it wasn’t just store clerks who were caught up in the sweep. Marc and Jodie Emery, known as Canada’s Prince and Princess of Pot, were arrested at the Toronto airport Wednesday night on the eve of the raids.

The Emerys created Cannabis Culture and have been opening franchises across the country. Now they are in a Toronto jail, facing charges of conspiracy, trafficking and possessing the proceeds of crime. They were to appear for a bail hearing Friday.

Illegal Toronto dispensary challenges Ottawa over medical marijuana laws

An illegal cannabis dispensary in Toronto has filed a suit in Federal Court to enshrine its right to sell the drug to its patients, alleging Canada’s current mail-order medical marijuana system does not provide reasonable access to pot.

Phytos Apothecary and Wellness Centre alleges that, despite a Federal Court ruling last year overturning the medical marijuana rules to allow patients to grow cannabis at home, the current system still creates “significant and undue burdens” for thousands of sick Canadians trying to get reasonable access to the drug of their choice.

“Our demographic is middle-aged to older people,” Rick Gillman of CanCann Consulting told CTV Barrie. “We do have lots of people in their 80s and even one I know in their 90s who are successfully using cannabis and having great results with it.”

Marijuana has been used to treat a diverse array of conditions, such as PTSD, epilepsy and arthritis. From general information about cannabis, as the plant is also called, to ways it can be turned into edibles, oils and tinctures, the workshop covered all aspects of using marijuana as a medicine.

Canada: Hamilton rally supports medical marijuana dispensaries

Medical marijuana dispensary owners, employees and patients gathered outside city hall Wednesday in protest of the city's crackdown against the businesses and to call for regulation.

The rally was organized in response to "cease and desist" letters sent out by the city to 17 medical marijuana dispensaries last week.

The letters cited zoning infractions and come with a warning of fines up to $50,000, plus up to $25,000 per day after conviction.

Ontario seeks input on marijuana growing proposal

Ontario officials will seek public comment on a proposal by Los Angeles-based MedMen to build and operate a 35,000- to 40,000-square-foot medical marijuana growing operation somewhere in Richland County — possibly on two undisclosed industrially zoned parcels within Ontario city limits.

Mayor Randy Hutchinson was non-commital about a conference call held recently with Barrett Thomas, director of economic development for the Richland Community Development Group; a MedMen company representative; and Shelby Mayor Steve Schag, in which the company described its plans to apply for a state license to open a marijuana growing operation. The marijuana would be for medical use.

Canadian Veteran Raises Money to Protest Changes to Medical Marijuana Coverage

Noah Starr says he has anxiety over upcoming changes to coverage.

A Fredericton veteran is raising money to send veterans to Ottawa to protest against coming changes in coverage for their medical marijuana prescriptions.

Veteran Noah Starr, who was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in Afghanistan, said the changes to medical marijuana coverage have taken a toll even before they go into effect.

"I already have anxiety about it," said Starr. "I won't lie.

"I know how effective it is for not only myself but for other retired Canadian Forces members."

Starr has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money so veterans with marijuana prescriptions for their PTSD can attend a protest scheduled for April 10.
