St. Pat's students win gold for contributing to cannabis research

A pair of students from St. Patrick’s High School won a gold medal at the Canada Wide Science Fair by conducting new research on a timely subject – cannabis use.

Kendra Prasad and Hannah McInnis’s study on the relationship between cannabis, brain injury and sleep wowed the judges at the national competition in Ottawa earlier this month.

The Grade 11 students needed an overall mark of 96 or higher on their display board, presentation and scientific content to snag the gold. They competed in the senior division for Grades 11 and 12, with only ten gold medals awarded in each age group.

The project’s inspiration came from learning that doctors are prescribing medical marijuana to brain injury survivors, despite little data on its benefits.

Ontario Municipalities left in the dark as the Federal and Provincial government push legalization

Canada is only weeks away from the original promised legalization date for recreational cannabis.

But while the federal and provincial governments have been working quickly to set the rules and put plans in motion, it seems the municipal governments have been left in the dark, at least according to one Ontario Mayor.

Mayor of the City of Brantford, Chris Friel, addressed an audience of cannabis industry professionals in a panel discussion at Lift & Co.’s Business Conference last week. He expressed visible frustration over how the municipalities have not been informed on or given the proper resources for legalization.

“We are not ready,” said Friel. “If we don’t know what the regulations are, we don’t know what we’re going to do.”

Options for Homes develops Toronto's first "Smoke Less" - or vape-only - condominium

When non-profit developer Options for Homes launches its latest development The Humber this summer, it will bring something new to the market: a "Smoke Less" condo building that will restrict the consumption of tobacco and cannabis to vapourizers.

The move is part of Options' commitment to creating a predominantly family friendly condo, which is reflected in the condo's suite mix, two-thirds of which are 2- and 3-bedroom suites suitable for families.

The Humber's comprehensive and thoughtful "Smoke Less" takes into account both the desire by many families to live in smoke-free buildings while also respecting homeowners' lifestyle choices to consume nicotine and cannabis products. It also addresses the forthcoming legalization of cannabis in Canada this year.

Canadian company will make cannabis beer – To get high, not drunk

At the Canadian Brewing Awards, Halifax, brewers from all over Canada have gathered to show off their finest brews. But this year’s conference has been eclipsed by a beer that doesn’t yet exist.

How is that possible? Well, we have two words for you: cannabis beer.

Beer experts know that a good beer needs great hops, being the main component in it. But here’s the thing: hops are relatives of the marijuana plant, so why not use it to make beer, if it’s going to be legalized?

Not Just the Flavour, But Also the High

Cannabis: the new tobacco?

Marijuana dispensaries are sprouting in large numbers on Mohawk territory, while community rules are up in the air.

It’s a 24-hour, seven-day a week business at the Pot Shoppe on Tyendinaga Mohawk territory, east of Belleville, Ont.

The small, cabin-like store was busy during the Victoria Day long weekend.

At one point on Sunday, a male customer walked in to buy a gram of whatever he could get for $10 and asked about job opportunities.

Robert Fisher, who goes by his Mohawk name Tehonikonrathe, was minding the counter and told the man apologetically that he’s not the guy to talk to about jobs and then measured out the gram.

The customer then noticed a tomato plant near the counter next to some cannabis clones.
